What is The Speaking Tree?

The Speaking Tree started out as a little canvas-covered stall in the alleyway of "The Glastonbury Experience" (a kind of alternative shopping mall in Glastonbury), where Gareth Mills sold secondhand books. The stall grew into Courtyard Books , a secondhand bookshop just paces from the stall. Then Gareth took on No. 5 High Street, selling new books, and called the shop 'The Speaking Tree'.

We have continued to develop quickly supplying shops and individuals throughout the country and planet and appearing at various UK festivals and MBS weekends. We have two shops and a warehouse based in Glastonbury. We wholesale globally and welcome trade enquiries and visitors to our warehouse (by appointment).

At the Speaking Tree we do our best to be environmentally responsible - reusing then recycling all our paper, employing local craftspeople to fit out our shops with natural materials, buying fairtrade and eco-friendly products, and using Ecotricity to supply our electricity.

Shop opening: Mon-Fri 9.30-5.30 Sat-Sun 10-6

Warehouse: Mon-Thurs 9-6

Office: Mon-Fri 9-5

  • Been in the shop and ordered with them through Amazon, great service and the free bookmarks are a nice touch. Huge range of book n just about every aspect of spirituality could spend a day browsing.
  • They have pretty much every angle you can think of covered here and the other shop over the road, and they dont get snippy if you are just browsing
  • Really good book shop with great prices.
  • A long running shop, full of reduced price esoteric books, some of which used to be very expensive. I have bought loads of books from this place of the years. My only criticism on this occasion, was the music. Most shops in the town have realised that to capture the imagination and inspiration of customers, sound is quite important. Downstairs, there was some new-age chanting which sounded fine and added to the ambience. Upstairs was a very different experience. It was overly loud pop music which was both distracting and not conducive to the what the shop was selling. The pop music would have been fine in a standard retail outlet or in the car. But this is Glastonbury, where many people go to get away from the mainstream. Most shops in the town have got this. This shop has only half got it. So, Speaking Tree, sort out your music and tune in to what most of the town has already done!
  • Fantastic bookshop with the esoteric reader in mind. Also publishes out-of-print works from 19th-early 20th century that would otherwise be inaccessible. And you get a free cotton bag if you spend over £20 (as of Nov 2017). Staff are very friendly too.
