  • It's a Roman Fort but hardly any is visible. We didn't buy guidebook so reliant on boards that seemed more inclined to post Roman periods. We would probably have had more interest with a guidebook. I ...  more »
  • On the way from Newcastle to Loch Lomond visit Birdoswald Roman Fort. A beautiful look at a section of Hadrian's Wall. The old fort and its remnants were worth to look at. Nice tiny little shop and staff. Because it was lunch time in the small restaurant lunch. Enjoyed a delicious Leek Soup, sandwiches and scones. Parking money got you come back to visit the fort.

  • Quite enjoyable although our motorhome had a few issues with the road. It was a bleak day but we did enjoy our outing.  more »

  • Massive old roman fort. It's ace. My advice: buy swords and run along the walls and pkay romans and celts.
  • Visited June 2016. The website states limited accessibility so my dad and I set off. However when we got there we were a bit dubious about the access so my dad ran in and got told by the staff that there isn't even limited access. Being in a wheelchair I understand that often there will be parts of historic sites I can't get to but had we known what the staff said we wouldn't have visited. So definitely not a place to visit in a wheelchair until they address their access, and definitely ignore the limited access advised on the website.
  • Not the most pleasant experience. On walking through the door my daughter mentioned she needed the bathroom to be met with a scathing response from a staff member that they weren't for the public. Customers only! Well we were intended on using the tea room. However, that didn't eventuate either as by 2pm they only had 3 sandwiches left...we were a party of 5. So directed to Lanercost down the road. Birdoswald, great for walking the wall but avoid the 'facilities'.
  • Good place to see Hadrians wall. Museum closed until Summer 2018 so only the fort ruins to see.
  • Very disappointing. Drove miles out of our way to find the site closed due to renovations in the visitor centre. Lots of work in the modern buildings, but no activity in the actual fort ruins at all, let alone anything which would require blocking access. Information from a visitor centre is a "nice to have", not a "must have". In any case, looking over the fence, there appears to be plenty of info signs within the fort. We met lots of unhappy people at Birdoswald today. English Heritage needs to review their policy and only block access where and when absolutely necessary.
