West Highland Museum, Fort William

4.6
#1 of 6 in Museums in Lochaber
The collections displayed at West Highland Museum narrate the rich history of the Scottish Highlands and its people. Spread over three floors, the museum's seven galleries trace the story of this mountainous region in the western part of the country, with special focus on the influence and significance of the Jacobite political movement. Don't miss the collection's highlight, an 18th-century portrait of Bonnie Prince Charlie, known as the instigator of the unsuccessful Jacobite uprising of 1745. Other notable features include regalia Queen Victoria gifted to John Brown, her trusted personal aide, as well as several displays dedicated to Highlands archaeology, wildlife, and military history. • Congratulations to the volunteers who takes care of this small museum. The tour is very interesting and the presentation of the objects is neat. The Lady at the reception is very nice. A visit that I really appreciated.

  • Excellent museum crammed full of historical artefacts. Staff very friendly and helpful too. Wee bit slow service at till as staff have to write down every individual item you purchase. Nice clean, tidy and well laid out exhibition though.
  • Lovely, eclectic museum with an old fashioned vibe. A random assortment of Highland memorabilia, but it works to paint a picture of the diverse features of the region. Located in a beautiful old building below Ben Nevis.
  • Lots of little things on display if you enjoy reading a lot. Free high speed wifi.
  • It's a small but well thought out museum. There's a surprising number of exhibits in it. The volunteer staff and both very knowledgeable and friendly.
  • Very interesting. A lot of historic memorabilia. Free of charge pleasant staff.

Where to stay in Fort William

A B&B along the high street provides access to pubs and cultural life. However, luxury hotels set among idyllic countryside are outside the city center. Consider a stay inside a refurbished historical building at one of the handful of guesthouses. less expensive lodging is also available in scenic areas within walking distance of the high street, or main street.
