Old Inverlochy Castle, Fort William

(460+ reviews on the web)
Castle
Visit the ruins of a 13th-century fortress at Old Inverlochy Castle, which has been unaltered since its heyday under the reign of King Alexander III. Strategically built on the entrance to the Great Glen, a key passage through the Scottish Highlands, the castle bears witness to two significant battles in Scotland's history. The castle follows the "enceinte" style, where the main defensive line of wall towers and curtain walls enclose the position. With one side defended by the river, the other three were protected by a moat (now gone). Tour the ruins along the many footpaths that wind throughout the property. • There are many ruined Castles in Scotland. This one still has enough standing to let you see the shape and it is free. That said it is small and will take about 5 minutes to see it all. We passed it w...  more »
  • While not something I would make a special effort to see, it was a lovely stop on our way out of town. Great setting. Interesting history.  more »
  • A pretty castle on the banks of river/loch. An easy quick walk all ground level take 10 minutes but nice spot to picnic. If you walk around the outside some of it is a bit boggy.  more »
