Old Inverlochy Castle, Fort William

3.7
Visit the ruins of a 13th-century fortress at Old Inverlochy Castle, which has been unaltered since its heyday under the reign of King Alexander III. Strategically built on the entrance to the Great Glen, a key passage through the Scottish Highlands, the castle bears witness to two significant battles in Scotland's history. The castle follows the "enceinte" style, where the main defensive line of wall towers and curtain walls enclose the position. With one side defended by the river, the other three were protected by a moat (now gone). Tour the ruins along the many footpaths that wind throughout the property. • I'm sure you could spend hours here, reading all the signs and learning about the castle's history. When we visited however, we couldn't really see that far in front of us due to the rain, so we had.....  more »
  • Well, not every castle has remained in mint condition. This one requires some imagination...its not a criticism, just a fact. Easy walking distance from town  more »
  • Scaffolding everywhere, only one area to get nice pictures without something modern in the frame and that basically what the main picture on here is, i wouldn't plan a visit around it if your doing a....  more »

  • Once again I was out chasing castles and this was one that I had passed by on a few occasions without getting the time to stop. This must have been a very impressive castle in its time but it could do with time being spent on it again. Overall it is a castle so I still enjoyed the visit
  • Better that Queen Victoria stated. Yes, there‚Äôs not much to see in that the castle is ruined, but worth a look. Entry was well priced (free)
  • If you like ruined castles it's worth a visit; if not, then not. Fairly easy access as you can park very near, and the paths inside the grounds are relatively keep. Or you can walk to it via various paths from Fort William.
  • You can tell this was a great castle in its prime. Definetaly loved the visit Bot sure about coming back
  • Impressive and extensive ruins in a very attractive setting by the River Lochy best approached from Fort William along the River path. This passes the site of the Inverlochy battles of 1431 and 1645 which is on the right of the path just before the railway bridge. The field is unmarked but there is an information board at the castle which gives some helpful detail. Well worth the effort
