Old Inverlochy Castle, Fort William
Categories: Castles, Tourist Spots
Visit the ruins of a 13th-century fortress at Old Inverlochy Castle, which has been unaltered since its heyday under the reign of King Alexander III. Strategically built on the entrance to the Great Glen, a key passage through the Scottish Highlands, the castle bears witness to two significant battles in Scotland's history. The castle follows the "enceinte" style, where the main defensive line of wall towers and curtain walls enclose the position. With one side defended by the river, the other three were protected by a moat (now gone). Tour the ruins along the many footpaths that wind throughout the property. Free and easy to park (go right not left like we did!). Not much to see but a few boards to read about the history and a nice view of the river.
If you are into castles and ruined castles this is lovely. It's a ruined 13th century castle that you can walk through. There is some information here and there as you walk through it. Parking right by the castle. It's worth a stop.
A nice park like setting. The are some plaquards describing what you see, but not much.
great castle in fort william! you can walk inside but there isn't much to do. nice atmosphere, free parking.
Free, and it's a decent ruined castle . You are not blocked off from it, you aren't charged an arm and a leg and you can walk through it and see it all.
