Old Inverlochy Castle, Fort William
(3.7/5 based on 440+ reviews on the web)
Visit the ruins of a 13th-century fortress at Old Inverlochy Castle, which has been unaltered since its heyday under the reign of King Alexander III. Strategically built on the entrance to the Great Glen, a key passage through the Scottish Highlands, the castle bears witness to two significant battles in Scotland's history. The castle follows the "enceinte" style, where the main defensive line of wall towers and curtain walls enclose the position. With one side defended by the river, the other three were protected by a moat (now gone). Tour the ruins along the many footpaths that wind throughout the property. Before you head to Fort William, plan trip itinerary details with our user-friendly Fort William vacation planner, to make sure you see all that Fort William has to offer, including Old Inverlochy Castle.

  • This is a great castle for the history of the Highlands and the results of two major battles. The beautiful River Lochy is on one side, and the castle has four towers, although in rustic condition. Th...  more »
  • Not much is left of the castle ruins, one gets an impression of how it once looked like anyway. Detour on a hike.

  • Great little stop with a nice view - we couldn't visit inside the ruins however we did take a walk around the castle and learned the history of it. Beautiful setting along the River Lochy.
  • Nice if you are in the area. But there is current preservation taking place but you can still see it.
  • Nice little Castle ruin. Sadly we couldn't get in since it's under some sort of restoration/maintenance.
  • Free and easy to park (go right not left like we did!). Not much to see but a few boards to read about the history and a nice view of the river.
  • Pretty. Nice views of the castle. Would like to know more of the history of the castle.
