Old Inverlochy Castle, Fort William

3.3
#3 of 8 in Historic Sites in Lochaber
Castle Tourist Spot
Visit the ruins of a 13th-century fortress at Old Inverlochy Castle, which has been unaltered since its heyday under the reign of King Alexander III. Strategically built on the entrance to the Great Glen, a key passage through the Scottish Highlands, the castle bears witness to two significant battles in Scotland's history. The castle follows the "enceinte" style, where the main defensive line of wall towers and curtain walls enclose the position. With one side defended by the river, the other three were protected by a moat (now gone). Tour the ruins along the many footpaths that wind throughout the property. Where to stay in Fort William

A B&B along the high street provides access to pubs and cultural life. However, luxury hotels set among idyllic countryside are outside the city center. Consider a stay inside a refurbished historical building at one of the handful of guesthouses. less expensive lodging is also available in scenic areas within walking distance of the high street, or main street.
