National Maritime Museum Cornwall, Falmouth

4.1
#2 of 92 in Museums in Cornwall
Inside a building near the harbor designed by M.J. Long rests the National Maritime Museum Cornwall. The current museum is the product of collaboration between two maritime museums in the area. In 2003, these two museums combined resources to open the museum without direct government support. In the galleries, you'll find exhibits telling stories of fishing, boatbuilding, wrecks, and the immigrants who helped shape the city of Cornwall into the diverse harbor town it is today. The Bartlett Library inside the museum is a center for maritime research and holds many of the original port records in its archives. • Brilliant museum with a good special exhibition on captain bligh, a warning though to go at high tide or the underwater level will be a big let down.  more »
  • Really well laid out museum with regular exhibits and time-limited special exhibitions, at the moment this is the history of tattooing and a Mutiny on the Bounty one. Recommended for those wet and win...  more »
  • Visited on a wet day. £12.50 entry for an adult is a bit steep. This is an annual cost but given most visitors may be holidaymakers it may be an idea to have a one off cost. Good exhibits, very inform...  more »

  • Great place to visit especially whilst on holiday, pay once for a 12 month return which if you have a couple of rainy days is ideal. Can get busy but it big enough to cope. If you go late afternoon on a dry day you can get the place to yourself. Mid to high tide is also a good time as there is a tidal gallery with windows below sea level for you to look through, although they are in desperate need of a clean. Gift shop is very expensive more so than most.
  • Nice place. Interesting bit of history. Incredible window on the sea at the back. Wish they could clean them lol
  • Great architecture. Very accessible. Good cafe. We loved the model boat sailing pool, where you had to navigate radio controlled model yachts against a real crosswind. Good interactive exhibits for young children, very helpful guides.
  • Great afternoon spent in the Maritime. ... loads of interesting and diverse things to see and do.... particularly enjoyed the Captain Bligh display and the very unusual tattoo exibit. Cracking afternoon and we will be back... one visit is not enough!
  • We expected more to see/do in this museum for the price. Beautiful building but disappointed comparing to other museums I've visited (London, Edinburgh, Barcelona, Bath, York ect.). Won't entertain you for a long time, maybe it would be better for family with kids, for us it lacked of things to see after half an hour.
