National Maritime Museum Cornwall, Falmouth

4.1
#2 of 68 in Museums in Cornwall
Inside a building near the harbor designed by M.J. Long rests the National Maritime Museum Cornwall. The current museum is the product of collaboration between two maritime museums in the area. In 2003, these two museums combined resources to open the museum without direct government support. In the galleries, you'll find exhibits telling stories of fishing, boatbuilding, wrecks, and the immigrants who helped shape the city of Cornwall into the diverse harbor town it is today. The Bartlett Library inside the museum is a center for maritime research and holds many of the original port records in its archives. Brilliant museum with a good special exhibition on captain bligh, a warning though to go at high tide or the underwater level will be a big let down.  more »

Really well laid out museum with regular exhibits and time-limited special exhibitions, at the moment this is the history of tattooing and a Mutiny on the Bounty one. Recommended for those wet and win...  more »

Visited on a wet day. £12.50 entry for an adult is a bit steep. This is an annual cost but given most visitors may be holidaymakers it may be an idea to have a one off cost. Good exhibits, very inform...  more »

  • I know the Maritime Museum really well. At present you have the Tatoo and Captain Bligh exhibits running side by side, not to forget the awesome boats and a sliding door of smaller exhibits throughout the year. As well as the exhibits for the grown ups, what I think the museum does really well is the entertainment and arts, play area for the kids that run in school holidays. Worth a visit.. definitely..
  • Great place for children to explore and have fun, but also very informative and interesting for adults of all ages. My son has enjoyed going regularly since he was 12 months old, but I really enjoy taking him.
  • Great museum, some really interesting exhibits and whilst its not the biggest museum, there was still plenty to see and do. Located by the harbour with plenty of nearby restaurants. Parking isn't free, but it's not too expensive. Definitely good for a rainy day out
  • Great museum to look around with some interesting exhibitions on at the moment. Can't wait for the Titanic one coming soon, I'll definitely be back when it's on.
  • Really great place to take the family, especially on wet days. Some exhibitions change periodically which means there's good incentive to return, but can mean sometimes the museum is more child friendly than on other occasions. Buying a ticket allows you to return for free for a year so long as you keep your ticket. Really good value if you're local. Finally the gift shop is actually pretty good and has a range of nautical gifts ranging from a couple of quid to hundreds.
