Fyrish Monument, Evanton

The Fyrish Monument is a monument built in 1782 on Fyrish Hill, in Fyrish near Alness, Easter Ross, Scotland, on the orders of Sir Hector Munro, 8th of Novar, a native lord of the area who had served in India as a general. As the local population were being cleared off their land, employment was a problem and so it was built to give the locals some work-how very kind. It was said that Sir Hector rolled stones from the top of the hill to the bottom, thereby extending the amount of time worked and paying the labourers for additional hours. It represents the Gate of Negapatam, a port in Madras, India, which General Munro took for the British in 1781. It is visible from almost anywhere in the parishes of Kiltearn and Alness. The site of the colonial monument provides an extensive view over the Cromarty Firth and beyond, and Ben Wyvis can be seen clearly, especially impressive if snow-covered. A path to the top starts at a car park northeast of the hill at OS grid NH627715.Sourceshttps://web.archive.org/web/20061002181022/http://www.clanmunro.org.uk/merchandise_files/maps.htmTouring Guide Scotland, p. 151.

  • Beautiful views overlooking the Cromarty Firth. The walk is only about 1 hour but some stretches will get you out of puff! For more open wildness, head out the back from the top!
  • To be honest it could be better marked on the way up, with some information about the monument at the top once you get there. We got to the top and had to Google what it actually was. Stunning views.
  • This is the local walk I’ve been doing since I was old enough to walk. Fantastic views of Ross Shire and a great monument at the top built in 1782 on the orders of Sir Hector Munro, 8th Laird of Novar.
  • Incredible views and an impressive monument! Solid way to add some physical activity to a trip through the Scottish Highlands.
  • Great 'off piste' mountain bike trails. Lookout for walkers.
