  • Took the grandsons to look round the display before entering the castle was very educational explaining how the castle came into being and changed from a fortified Manor House into a full blown castle...  more »
  • I would recommend the audio tour to accompany a visit to this place - it really helps to bring to life the tragedy of Flodden Field and the place of Etal Castle within that story.  more »
  • This is quite a small castle - more of a fortified manor house. The info boards give a great insight into its fascinating history and there is a nice exhibition too about the nearby battle at Flodden....  more »

  • Tickets to see the castle are £5 per adult. This is a massively inflated price for access to what is a very small area of ruined castle, a gift shop, and a one room exhibition on the battles fought at the castle and surrounding area with some replica weapons and armour and some recent history of the current estate. Save your money and look over the small hedge in front of the gift shop, that gives you a view of all that remains of the castle! The Castle and Grounds are well kept, and there is ample nearby parking and good toilet facilities nearby. Beware though as the whole Ford and Etal experience is a very big tourist trap linked together by a chargeable light railway (£7 per adult per day) where at every stop you have to pay to see the next attraction. A day out here can very rapidly become very pricey if you go through more than a few stops or excursions.
  • Historical castle with a lot of history behind it. Situated next to a nice cafe for food and drink including the known singing hinny. Overall a nice place to view
  • End of the line for the steam train from Heatherslaw, Castle can be viewed, large car park, souvenir shop, nice short walk into town, tearoom. Bit quiet, would be nice to have a playpark for younger kids.
  • One of the many wonderful castles situated in the Borders both in England and Scotland, combine a visit to this castle and Etal village with a ride on the Heatherslaw steam narrow gauge railway which links Heatherslaw station and the Heatherslaw Corn mill to Etal terminus / engine turntable just below the castle.(Watching the engine turned by hand on the turntable is well worth a visit alone).
  • Small but interesting little castle. Pretty good exhibition in the visitor centre.
