  • Lovely long walk first then into coffee shop for coffee and lemon drizzle cake. Lots of choice of nice Homebakes on offer. Very busy .
  • With the approach of fall almost all properties NTS close, so I affretata to check on the site what was still available. I had never been to Haddo House, checking on the web and having heard of the wonderful discovery of a genuine Rafael, I rushed to plan a trip. Once there, I was a little puzzled. Coming from the car park the first thing you notice is a cup of coffee, few indications to say the House is beyond that and the shop, and then you find yourself in the large courtyard in front of the great Edwardian façade. Which, incidentally, looks a little dirty, stained by pollution and by time, and that gives some idea of a poorly supervised maintenance. The entrance lobby is welcoming and the girl informs us that for that day admission was free because some areas were closed due to a wedding, and that they were not scheduled guided tours but you can wander around and there will be staff members to answer any questions. We climb the stairs and we find one of the above States that outlines the history of the House-friendly knowledgeable guy, light show and commendable-indi we wander around itself and ... in half an hour it is already out. One floor of a large Victorian house-in the Interior-visited, what content there is is nothing very special, that we cannot see in greater abundance in other properties, and the famous portrait of Raphael Yes worth a long look, but the poverty of his show had something pathetic. It is a painted rather tiny, square, which was hung next to the Bay window in the dining room, a small cordon to keep away the crowds of people around you. The light around the painting was absolutely awful, counting which was placed in a frame with glass, which didn't help for anything to get a good view, and in declamarne the importance there was a big guy in a kilt who I assume was an art expert--I suppose because his hand was more a show than an exhibition of the painting and then after 10 minutes I decided to get enough chatter. No brochures or Panel or written explanation-I guess I have not had time to prepare them ... or the desire to spend some money to do so-then amen. After this some bedroom, nursery and little more, and we ended up back on the landing: after the visit, and to myself, "Well, that's all?" was inevitable. We made a stop at Café at the entrance-quality dishes but the spread was an annoying shortage-and interest-free shop. The day was cold and we avoided to take a tour of the estate, although reading the comments of others, I understand it is that the pride of ownership, and not the House itself. Unfortunately it was the last weekend when Haddo House was open then, having browsed through the Guide and seeing the pictures of the rooms that I couldn't go, I was very dissatisfied. Usually on the NTS site are highlighted the days when there are particular changes to tours and visits, but not for that day, otherwise I don't think I would have wasted my time in it.
