Where to stay in Edinburgh

Edinburgh hides a maze of cobbled streets dotted with boutique hotels offering inexpensive rooms and outstanding restaurants. Many of the city's Gothic buildings house chic hotels with easy access to most of the city’s main tourist sites. For a uniquely Scottish experience, consider staying in the famous old town. Despite being in this historical district, many hotels here feature contemporary decor with lots of glass walls and muted color schemes. They’re also known for offering spacious rooms, comfortable beds, and restaurants serving classic European cuisine, with a modern Scottish twist.

  • If, like me, you enjoy and are fascinated by writers either from Scotland, or who wrote between 1700 and 1900 - then you'll love this place! Equally, if you have only heard the mention of Rabbie Burns...  more »
  • The literary history of Edinburgh is extensive. This little museum is a wonderful way to celebrate it. It's Free and focuses on 3 writers from Scotland. The mansion itself is worth checking out.  more »
  • Run by the city, this museum is closed Mon/Tue, despite some signs/advertising to the contrary, so CHECK. It was also closed before the advertised time of 5pm when the eager custodian first locked us ...  more »

  • Are you a book lover? Are just interested in seeing what really Scottish culture is? Do you just wanna entry for free in a museum? Then The Writer's Museum is the right place to be. They have the three main Scottish writers there and they explain you briefly how they used to live. It's a small but really interesting house. If you have any chance, go there.
  • Cool, small museum which focuses on the lives of several Scottish writers: Robert Burns, Water Scott, and Robert Louis Stevenson. The items displayed are small, intimate pieces from their lives (journals, a pipe, that sort of thing) and the personal nature of these items is really neat.
  • Small but free. Worth the visit as it neatly covers important Scottish writters like Burns Stephenson. Also had a small shop with themed items.
  • A small museum packed with a plethora of fascinating information. A must see for anyone who is interested in arts and literature.
  • Very neat house, but one has to have specific interest in literature and in the writers in order to appreciate the museum.
