St Giles' Cathedral, Edinburgh

4.6
Referred to as the High Kirk of Edinburgh, St Giles' Cathedral is the city's principal place of worship. Located on the Royal Mile, the cathedral is an iconic landmark in the Edinburgh skyline. Much of the current building was restored in the 19th century, but the four pillars in the center are thought to date back to 1124. Chapels, called aisles, were built around the pillars and extended out on all sides. This unique arrangement coupled with the vaulted ceilings and vibrant stained glass give the cathedral a timelessness. • This cathedral is charming. You can definitely look around it pretty quickly, and it's in the centre of the Royal Mile for easy access.  more »
  • Solid on the outside with a magnificent crown spire but nothing special on the inside, except for the Thistle Chapel which is a little gem and the stained glass windows which are stunning - spent a go...  more »

  • First time I 've been to a cathedral so small, but elegant. After the pomp and splendour of St:Paul's and Westminister Abby in London, this was a place where one felt like kneeling down in front of the Lord! And the architecture is so splendid as to easily capture your attention and interest for more than a couple of hours.
  • Thoroughly enjoyable Cathedral with a cafe downstairs and a special side chapel only open certain hours of the day. Open daily, but since it is a working cathedral, there will be times on Sunday where it is unavailable for showing. Usually there is a roof tour for small numbers and only when it isn't raining. There's a cozy little gift shop too.
  • Beautiful stained glass, historic memorial plaques, and the Thistle Chapel. Trying to find the green men is interesting too. Well worth visiting.
  • Amazing architecture. Stunning windows. It's a beautiful building and a sanctuary of worship. There are events throughout the summer. Also a small gift shop. There are guided tours. You have to buy a photography permit but it's well worth it to take the memories of the place away with you.
  • Absolutely stunning. Gift shop upstairs, bottom flow can set up city of the dead tours, basement there's a cafe. The inside is gorgeous, happened to have went in when a choir was singing. Definitely recommend the stop if you're on The Royal Mile.
