St Giles' Cathedral, Edinburgh

4.6
Referred to as the High Kirk of Edinburgh, St Giles' Cathedral is the city's principal place of worship. Located on the Royal Mile, the cathedral is an iconic landmark in the Edinburgh skyline. Much of the current building was restored in the 19th century, but the four pillars in the center are thought to date back to 1124. Chapels, called aisles, were built around the pillars and extended out on all sides. This unique arrangement coupled with the vaulted ceilings and vibrant stained glass give the cathedral a timelessness. • This cathedral is charming. You can definitely look around it pretty quickly, and it's in the centre of the Royal Mile for easy access.  more »
  • Solid on the outside with a magnificent crown spire but nothing special on the inside, except for the Thistle Chapel which is a little gem and the stained glass windows which are stunning - spent a go...  more »

  • Amazing architecture. Stunning windows. It's a beautiful building and a sanctuary of worship. There are events throughout the summer. Also a small gift shop. There are guided tours. You have to buy a photography permit but it's well worth it to take the memories of the place away with you.
  • Awesome cathedral(high kirk) in the city that dates back to late 14th century. There is short sermon of 15 mins around 12pm and everyone is welcome to join. Musical performances are often held here during lunch too.
  • Not your typical cathedral. This place is more interesting and has staff that will gladly tell you more about some aspects. Only minor downside is you have to pay 2 pounds to take photos inside.
  • Awesome architecture. It's beautiful from the inside too! A must visit spot for tourists!
  • It's an extremely beautiful architectural structure. We didn't get the time to go inside, however from outside itself it was extremely beautiful. A must see on the Royal Mile.

Where to stay in Edinburgh

Edinburgh hides a maze of cobbled streets dotted with boutique hotels offering inexpensive rooms and outstanding restaurants. Many of the city's Gothic buildings house chic hotels with easy access to most of the city’s main tourist sites. For a uniquely Scottish experience, consider staying in the famous old town. Despite being in this historical district, many hotels here feature contemporary decor with lots of glass walls and muted color schemes. They’re also known for offering spacious rooms, comfortable beds, and restaurants serving classic European cuisine, with a modern Scottish twist.
