St Giles' Cathedral, Edinburgh
(4.6/5 based on 3,400+ reviews on the web)
Referred to as the High Kirk of Edinburgh, St Giles' Cathedral is the city's principal place of worship. Located on the Royal Mile, the cathedral is an iconic landmark in the Edinburgh skyline. Much of the current building was restored in the 19th century, but the four pillars in the center are thought to date back to 1124. Chapels, called aisles, were built around the pillars and extended out on all sides. This unique arrangement coupled with the vaulted ceilings and vibrant stained glass give the cathedral a timelessness. Make St Giles' Cathedral part of your personalized Edinburgh itinerary using our Edinburgh tourist route planner.

  • This cathedral is a beautiful spot to rest your weary legs. Be sure to check their musical program and try to catch an evening concert while you're in town.
  • Great, warm ambience. Charming cafe downstairs which I would probably frequent if I lived in Edinburgh. Lively service shedule, if of interest.
  • Personally, I think it's the most interesting attraction of Edinburgh. Don't miss the Thistle Chapel, located at the bottom of the nave on the right. On some days there are organized tours on the roof of the Cathedral.

  • Super busy because of its location but well worth a visit because of it's unique architectural points and history. However I was very annoyed to see a sign saying there is a 2 pound charge to take a photo. I thought greed was a sin?
  • Listened to the organ concert as I happened to arrive right at the beginning and the feeling was of serenity and peace. One of the loveliest cathedrals I've ever seen. Definitely worth a visit.
  • Beautiful church on the Royal Mille. Free entrance, but charged you if you want to take pic.
  • So well preserved and so beautiful, the glass windows are spectacular. There was a choir concert going on, very nice. I would have loved to enter it with a guide or someone who told me all about it.
  • You cannot actually enjoy exterior, but inside it is beautiful cathedral.
