St Giles' Cathedral, Edinburgh

4.6
Referred to as the High Kirk of Edinburgh, St Giles' Cathedral is the city's principal place of worship. Located on the Royal Mile, the cathedral is an iconic landmark in the Edinburgh skyline. Much of the current building was restored in the 19th century, but the four pillars in the center are thought to date back to 1124. Chapels, called aisles, were built around the pillars and extended out on all sides. This unique arrangement coupled with the vaulted ceilings and vibrant stained glass give the cathedral a timelessness. • Perhaps not the most stunning around, but this is a very nice cathedral in a great location just down from the castle We were there for a piano recital so we're sat and able to study the ceiling, pill...  more »
  • It has beautiful stained glass windows and is a must see in the Royal Mille. Right on your doorstep is the Heart of Midlothian

  • Beautiful cathedral at least for what we saw beyond the barriers because you will have to relieve yourself of 5 pounds to visit it from the half turn because pay to put a candle OK but pay a visitation right without guide which is more not so much that for 2livres more one can make pictures

  • A beautiful building with some very important people remembered there. The entrance fee is voluntary but is worth it, even if you make a smaller donation everything helps to maintain the building. The cafe downstairs is very good, reasonably priced with home made dishes and friendly staff
  • Its a £5 suggested donation and a further £2 to take photos inside. The window panels are amazing and have great detail and like all old churches the organ looks amazing. The separate little chapel on the side has an amazing history around the Scottish Knights. Nice place to visit.
  • Wonderful Cathedral. They are, of course, a dime a dozen, but this one is truly special. Absolutely incredible artwork and architecture. A gigantic and beautiful organ. Definitely a great place to visit.
  • Founded in 1124, restored in 14th century, such back and forth with various religions - a dream for history lovers and still a practicing church. The Thistle Chapel is a must see with chairs for the 16 Knights of the Order and one for the Queen. I've seen grander churches, but the history here is remarkable. There was no entry fee but a box for donations.
  • If in the area, stop in. It’s a beautiful cathedral full of history. We also enjoyed a cup of coffee in the cafe. Lovely cathedral in the middle of historic Edinburgh!
