St Giles' Cathedral, Edinburgh

4.6/5 based on 3,200+ reviews on the web
Referred to as the High Kirk of Edinburgh, St Giles' Cathedral is the city's principal place of worship. Located on the Royal Mile, the cathedral is an iconic landmark in the Edinburgh skyline. Much of the current building was restored in the 19th century, but the four pillars in the center are thought to date back to 1124. Chapels, called aisles, were built around the pillars and extended out on all sides. This unique arrangement coupled with the vaulted ceilings and vibrant stained glass give the cathedral a timelessness. • As travelers have the entrance is free and there is freedom to take photos-its majestic construction, great location which allows you to see it from a distance, the coffered ceiling, light that filter out the stained glass windows, the construction of columns with arcades make sure one is rapt.-after the monastery of York, the best thing we saw in Britain - up to now missing much.

  • Architecture is nice, but the finishings not as impressive. Stained glass windows were cool. Altar was very modern and out of place.
  • This cathedral was huge, a lovely exhibition currently run with a very interesting use of material and way of picture the Christian values, certainly worth a visit if you love seeing church architecture and grandeur.
  • Beautiful and majestic, but a wee bit tourist mainstream. This beautiful old cathedral is right at the heart of Edinburgh. It is a wonderful sight to behold both from the out- and inside. However you need to pay 2£ to be allowed to photograph inside it.
  • Beautiful cathedral, well worth stopping in to have a walk around. It is free but please do give a donation.
  • Very impressive cathedral, fitting nicely into as such beautiful city as Edinburgh.
