  • Both buildings, 1 and 2 are worth a visit. They are close by each other, a 15 minute walk from Edinburgh West End. The works of art are varied, something for everyone who is interested in modern art. ...  more »
  • The Pop Art exhibition, Paolozzi 's studio and outside installations interesting to teen granddaughter so added value to visit.  more »
  • A highlight of our trip. Lovely museum, well worth the trip out of town. Shuttle bus runs between the three museums, but was full on the return trip. Very busy in August. Other buses - Route 13, runs ...  more »

  • I don't know a huge amount about art but I love going to the modern art galleries. There's usually a free exhibition and other work that you can see for few. There's also normally a paid one, sometimes two. The annual membership isn't expensive and is worth it if you are going to a couple of exhibitions a year and it gets you in to the other galleries in Edinburgh. Both buildings are in a great location, with parking, and have really nice grounds/gardens. Inside the layout is spacious with plenty of room to appreciate the exhibitions. The restaurant is excellent, with great food at a very reasonable price.
  • Excellent shuttle bus from centre of Edinburgh, thank goodness as a bit of a walk there on a warm day. Really nice restaurant if a bit pricey, but make sure you book a table as soon as you get there as very popular (I arrived at 12.30 and decided to have an early lunch) The Joan Eardley exhibition was fascinating with lots of her paintings as well as letters and sketchbooks to get a deeper knowledge of artist. I would love to have seen it again but too far away. I do find building a bit claustrophobic hence 4 stars
  • Always something on show to infuriate or infatuate you. Some great exhibitions over the past few years. Cheap parking for Edinburgh, great cafes but busy at weekends. Perfect for Water of Leith walkway start point.
  • Gorgeous building and grounds, hard to imagine this was once an orphanage. The quality of exhibitions varies as they come and go, but the permanent surrealist collection is impressive and the recreation of Eduardo Paulozzi's workshop is a joy to behold. Some nice works in the grounds and an excellent café/restaurant with table service.
  • A really interesting place with a well organised permanent exhibition. Although they could try a wee bit more and acquire more paintings in order to tell a more interesting story.

Where to stay in Edinburgh

Edinburgh hides a maze of cobbled streets dotted with boutique hotels offering inexpensive rooms and outstanding restaurants. Many of the city's Gothic buildings house chic hotels with easy access to most of the city’s main tourist sites. For a uniquely Scottish experience, consider staying in the famous old town. Despite being in this historical district, many hotels here feature contemporary decor with lots of glass walls and muted color schemes. They’re also known for offering spacious rooms, comfortable beds, and restaurants serving classic European cuisine, with a modern Scottish twist.
