#16 of 55 in Museums in Edinburgh
The People’s Story explores the lives of Edinburgh’s ordinary people at work and play from the late 18th century to today. The People’s Story is housed in the Canongate Tollbooth, a Royal Mile landmark built in 1591 and used in the past to conduct burgh affairs, collect taxes and as a jail. If you want to experience a real slice of Edinburgh life in the past, from workdays to washdays, high days to holidays, The People’s Story is the museum to visit.

The Museum can talk to the residents about their lives in Edinburgh. The period from the 18th century until the end of 1980 is handled. The development of the professional world as well as the way of life itself are the main focus of the show. The extension to the present I'm missing, because since the 80's the company yes no has stopped. Since it is free, everyone should visit this museum.

This was A very informative museum showing how people lived in Edinburgh over the years. How the classes intersected. The story is told using scenes set up with mannequins. Really informative and well...  more »

Although it is true that the Royal Mile has more and better, a stop of 30-40 minutes in this rather unusual Museum is wise: realize of living in Edinburgh in the various periods through the reconstruction of the experiences of some subjects taken for example is not an extemporaneous pastime but a good way to increase the knowledge of the country you are visiting. And the exposure is very accurate and agreeable. The visit is free, you can easily match that of the Museum of Edinburgh, located almost opposite.

  • This is probably the coolest small museum in Edinburgh that nobody outside of Scotland has heard of. The story of the people and their struggles and lives is incredible, honest, and endearing. Go to this place! Make a donation to keep it alive. Ask lots of questions, the staff wandering around are happy to chat with you.
  • A museum about living in 16th-18th century Edinburgh, jobs and earning of different occupations are exhibited here.
  • Hadn't visited here before so popped in for a quick visit - a good size, with a focus on the 'real' people of Edinburgh, rather than the famous names. It covers up until the early 1990s and some things are a bit dated, but for a free museum can't complain! Particularly enjoyed the room with the various professions, and how they compared men to women. There are some stairs, but there also appeared to be a lift for those with mobility issues. A small gift shop and toilets are available.
  • Quirky social history of Edinburgh. Worth a browse. Not too large so won't suck up loads of time browsing every detail. Free toilets on the top floor.
  • Great free place. Covers history from way back till 1980s. Well worth the visit.

Many of the city's Gothic buildings house chic hotels with easy access to most of the city’s main tourist sites. For a uniquely Scottish experience, consider staying in the famous old town.
