I.J. Mellis Cheesemonger, Edinburgh

4.5
#14 of 53 in Shopping in Edinburgh
Treat your taste buds at I.J. Mellis Cheesemonger, a small (and somewhat stinky) store. Opened over 20 years ago, the shop has been described as an "Aladdin's cave" for cheese, boasting a wide assortment of local and international product. Those who take their cheese seriously can pick up a number of accoutrements including baguettes, chutneys, and oils. Consult the expert staff for information about different flavors and pairings. If you're ready for a bite to eat, head upstairs to the on-site cafe to enjoy a warm cheese toasty. Use our Edinburgh trip itinerary planner to arrange your visit to I.J. • Great cheese, great meat, and great staff. The red deer black pudding (more like a chorizo, really) was a particular highlight, as was a wonderful brandy-washed soft cheese, the name of which escapes me. The staff I've spoken to on the occasions I've visited have all made lovely recommendations for new things to try.
  • top quality cheese, charcuterie, and everything else they sell. great to have them in edinburgh,,,try the croque monsieurs in stockbridge on sundays,.,. what a treat.,..,
  • Amazing option of cheeses, great prices, definitely the place to find any cheese you need in town.
  • A cheese-lover's paradise. Customer service of the highest order.
  • Nice little shop with a good selection of cheese. They let us try a few different cheeses and helped us decide on the best!

Where to stay in Edinburgh

Edinburgh hides a maze of cobbled streets dotted with boutique hotels offering inexpensive rooms and outstanding restaurants. Many of the city's Gothic buildings house chic hotels with easy access to most of the city’s main tourist sites. For a uniquely Scottish experience, consider staying in the famous old town. Despite being in this historical district, many hotels here feature contemporary decor with lots of glass walls and muted color schemes. They’re also known for offering spacious rooms, comfortable beds, and restaurants serving classic European cuisine, with a modern Scottish twist.
