I.J. Mellis Cheesemonger, Edinburgh

4.5
#19 of 76 in Shopping in Edinburgh
Treat your taste buds at I.J. Mellis Cheesemonger, a small (and somewhat stinky) store. Opened over 20 years ago, the shop has been described as an "Aladdin's cave" for cheese, boasting a wide assortment of local and international product. Those who take their cheese seriously can pick up a number of accoutrements including baguettes, chutneys, and oils. Consult the expert staff for information about different flavors and pairings. If you're ready for a bite to eat, head upstairs to the on-site cafe to enjoy a warm cheese toasty. Put I.J. • Little cheese shop close to the Royal Mile. Amazing selection of local, Scottish cheeses and imported ones. Also have some very good artisan charcuterie, preserves and crackers to go with the cheeses. The staff there are happy to help, offer tastings and advice to cheeses to try.
  • Great cheese, great meat, and great staff. The red deer black pudding (more like a chorizo, really) was a particular highlight, as was a wonderful brandy-washed soft cheese, the name of which escapes me. The staff I've spoken to on the occasions I've visited have all made lovely recommendations for new things to try.

Where to stay in Edinburgh

Edinburgh hides a maze of cobbled streets dotted with boutique hotels offering inexpensive rooms and outstanding restaurants. Many of the city's Gothic buildings house chic hotels with easy access to most of the city’s main tourist sites. For a uniquely Scottish experience, consider staying in the famous old town. Despite being in this historical district, many hotels here feature contemporary decor with lots of glass walls and muted color schemes. They’re also known for offering spacious rooms, comfortable beds, and restaurants serving classic European cuisine, with a modern Scottish twist.
