4.4/5 based on 35+ reviews on the web
Treat your taste buds at I.J. Mellis Cheesemonger, a small (and somewhat stinky) store. Opened over 20 years ago, the shop has been described as an "Aladdin's cave" for cheese, boasting a wide assortment of local and international product. Those who take their cheese seriously can pick up a number of accoutrements including baguettes, chutneys, and oils. Consult the expert staff for information about different flavors and pairings. If you're ready for a bite to eat, head upstairs to the on-site cafe to enjoy a warm cheese toasty. Use our Edinburgh trip itinerary planner to arrange your visit to I.J. • Small shop which sells lots of local cheeses and meats and not other products. Priced accordingly. We tried a couple of really good local cheeses.

  • Great cheesemonger, friendly service, wish we had somewhere like this in newcastle.
  • Mellis Cheesemonger in Victoria Street is a lovely boutique where you will find delicious cheeses from Scotland, the UK, France and more. Bread, cheeses and apple are their main products, you could almost be in a French cheesemonger. If you feel like offering a box of different cheeses to your friend, they will advise you well. You even can ask for one of their lovely gift boxes. The only thing negative I could say, is that the customer service is sometime a bit "light".
  • One of those Stockbridge shops that it's crazy difficult to walk past without heading into. Whether you're a man on a mission to pick up just what you need, or want to sample a few new things before a picnic, the staff are friendly and helpful. Also loved the fact I could buy fresh farm butter at the same time!
  • Edinburgh's favourite friendly local cheesemonger - local that is if you live in or near Stockbridge or Victoria Street. A warm greeting on entry to the shop but no pressure or hounding to buy, followed up with sound advice and samples. Always big love for a sample of cheese! Excellent range of British and European cheeses plus all the accoutrements you might need including our favourite, Traklements Fig Relish. Tell the what you like/don't like and they can surely find something new for you to try suited to your tastes. Mmmmm cheese!
  • If there was a cheese shop in a Roald Dahl book, it would look like this. If they had bigger windows, you can almost imagine cheese craving tots pressing their noses against the glass, just to get a look at those round wheels. Inside, there's cheese pilled high as far as the eye can see (and some fancy meats too) – and the smell, oh wow, the smell is amazing and almost overwhelming! If you're looking for an indulgent, creamy cheese or a cheese to pair with beer, this is THE place to go.
