  • Very old ruins. Interesting to see and photograph beside the gardens. And you could see people climbing Arthur's seat from the gardens  more »
  • Located next to the Palace of HolyRoodHouse, at the bottom of the Royal Mile. It was founded in 1128 by King David I of Scotland, with the appearance that he had after falling from a horse: a cross that came down from heaven (holi rood = Holy Cross). Over the centuries it suffered much destruction and renovations. It was also a strategic place, near the Castle, for this much visited by Monarchs for coronations and weddings. In the South aisle, many graves of members of the Royal family, noblemen or clergymen. Beautiful details of the capitals.

  • This was actually my favourite part of our visit to the Holyrood Palace and grounds. The Abbey is a very imposing, atmospheric, and yet remarkably well maintained ruin. I wish we had visited during the summer, when more of the grounds would have been open to the public!
  • Though it is in ruins today, the structure is still imposing for an abbey. One can only imagine how it was decorated during its days. Photos are of Holyrood palace which is part of the admission.
  • Wonderful tour! highly recommend!
  • Take the free tour the fabulous guide Jamie, so knowledgeable and interesting best 45 minutes.

Where to stay in Edinburgh

Edinburgh hides a maze of cobbled streets dotted with boutique hotels offering inexpensive rooms and outstanding restaurants. Many of the city's Gothic buildings house chic hotels with easy access to most of the city’s main tourist sites. For a uniquely Scottish experience, consider staying in the famous old town. Despite being in this historical district, many hotels here feature contemporary decor with lots of glass walls and muted color schemes. They’re also known for offering spacious rooms, comfortable beds, and restaurants serving classic European cuisine, with a modern Scottish twist.
