  • Interesting shaped castle; part of it looks like a ship. Beautiful views from atop. You can roam on your own, no tours.  more »
  • I liked the simplicity of Blackness castle. It is not a big attraction but very charming. the castle is in good nick and you can walk up into both towers and have some great views over the surrounding...  more »
  • A very well preserved castle directly on the sea. You can get to the top to get great views of the surroundings. A pier can lead you to the middle of the water. Well worth the trip.  more »

  • I love visiting castles and historic sites, and this was no exception. The admission price is very reasonable, and the staff are super friendly. Fair warning, it does get very cold and windy, due to the location. So bring warm clothes and be prepared for slippy stonework if it rains. (We visited to mark off an item for a charity scavenger hunt, that called for footage of a Scottish castle. We were buying tickets when the wonderful lady in the shop waved the admission, since it was for a good cause!)
  • Dramatic location with great views. Intact castle with many stairways, passages and rooms to explore. Good picnic area. Hours of fun for all. Only a couple of cycle racks. Could do with a few more! Could sacrifice one of many car parking spaces for a few more cycle racks.
  • Such a cool castle and it looks amazing up close as it does being a focus point along this beautiful shoreline. Great views from here of the new forth bridge. I've lived locally all my life and only just visited this today and I wish I'd done it before now. I definitely recommend everyone visiting here.
  • A lovely visit for myself and some friends. Would strongly suggest going if you like castles and Scottish history. Great views of the river forth from the castle as well (even on cloudy days)
  • Great staff, reasonable price (£6 per adult) and a pleasingly intact old structure. Some great views from the ramparts too. It would be great if there was some reconstruction, as it is it's pretty bare but good for a clamber around a historical castle.

Where to stay in Edinburgh

Edinburgh hides a maze of cobbled streets dotted with boutique hotels offering inexpensive rooms and outstanding restaurants. Many of the city's Gothic buildings house chic hotels with easy access to most of the city’s main tourist sites. For a uniquely Scottish experience, consider staying in the famous old town. Despite being in this historical district, many hotels here feature contemporary decor with lots of glass walls and muted color schemes. They’re also known for offering spacious rooms, comfortable beds, and restaurants serving classic European cuisine, with a modern Scottish twist.
