  • After a short look around I took an afternoon tour, which was informative and occasionally amusing. The tour guide had a habit of going off on tangents, but did a good job of framing the Redoubt Fort in history by the end. I didn't spend that much time in the museum, outside of the tour, but the projections of soldiers and other notable characters did a good job of making the history come alive. Note: It's free to go into the fort and the ramparts, including the coffee shop, but it costs £4.50 to go into the museum. The coffee shop, the Outpost, is in one of the casements and benefits from the both the ambience of the curved ceiling, historical decor and a number of comfy seats. A latte was £2, which was a bargain and much better than some of the more expensive coffee shops that are in town. The fort square is a great sun trap and has lots of picnic tables. I imagine it's a nice place for locals to visit in the off-peak soaking up the sunshine while having a drink. Generally, I'd say the fort works well as an enjoyable excursion for a few hours as long as you take a tour to make it worthwhile.
  • Interesting guided tour available by local historian, whose passion, knowledge and experience were demonstrated in his description of the stories that make up the history of this site, and its place in local and British history.
  • We popped in for a look while in town for a Ladies Festival for 2 reasons - we were bored and it was free! We spent a good hour there though, learning about the history of the fortress and the people that served there. An interesting slice of history that we knew nothing about!
  • Great place. Real history. Dedicated staff. In need of funds to really put it on the map. Small cafe and shop.
  • Twilight tour with spooky stories of disease and terrible deaths. Tours this week only, approx 45 mins
