Durham Heritage Coast, Durham

4.6
#3 of 8 in Parks in Durham
Take a walk along the cliffs of Durham Heritage Coast, a once-booming coal mining area now restored to its natural beauty, including the spectacular rock pools at Blackhall rocks. The 17.7 km (11 mi) trail running along the cliffs from Seaham to Crimdon in the south makes a great way to take in the scenery. The coast supports a variety of plant and animal life, and features hidden caves, streams, and waterfalls. If you have time, explore the coast's towns with shops and cafes. • Excellent place for walking. Suitable for families as well as the more hardy. A mixture of the natural, with the occasional instrusion of human occupation.
  • Stayed in Roker and went to Seaham beach and others everyday to collect sea glass. The coast I'd beautiful. Varied from miles of smooth sand to miles of pebbles. Steep steps to access the beaches and amazing cliffs and caves. The area was very industrial and there are worderful art works in the streets which reflect that. Visited the glass museum which is a must if you are in the area. Really great place to visit.
  • they are really trying to add value to your visit. You must go to the old harbour and see new retail shops and cafes/pancake parlours. The main beach is great for kids and dogs but would think twice on visiting the Blast Furnace beach still has a lot of rubble that's not good for kids or dogs. on the plus side if you're after sea glass this is one of the top beaches in the NE for finds
  • Visited Hawthorn Dene. Beautiful deep wooded valley, very peaceful.
  • There are many places to visit and the surrounding towns have many attractions to explore the castles, waterfalls, the harbor in Durham is a huge ship and for a low charge it moves in time I recommend it very quiet, silent also around Lidl, Aldi , Matalan, Next, and others and good food.
