Crook Hall & Gardens, Durham

(4.7/5 based on 650+ reviews on the web)
Crook Hall & Gardens is a rare example of three eras of English architecture--Medieval, Jacobean, and Georgian--set in idyllic themed gardens. The history of those who have lived in Crook Hall & Gardens is varied, and each family has left their mark on the property. It is currently the home of Keith and Maggie Bell, whose family has lived here for three generations. Inside you can discover the quirks and treasures of this historic home. Try to spot the White Lady who is rumored to haunt the old stairs. Stroll through the gardens, all of which have their own histories (some dating back centuries) and personalities. Discover the orchard, vegetable garden, moat pool, and maze. Soak up the charming English atmosphere over a homemade cream tea in the courtyard, or get cozy in front of a log fire in the Georgian dining room. Pick up the Garden Guide at the entrance, which gives insight into the history of the property and life at the hall for the Bells. • I visited with my elderly friend, as I had bought her the garden gate tea voucher as a Christmas gift. We had an absolutely lovely day. The gardens were great, even though not many flowers out as yet,...  more »
  • Even though the gardens were not in flower, I still spent a good couple of hours wandering around them, followed by Tamarind the cat. Don't miss any of the nooks hidden away, and take some time to wal...  more »
  • Two great cafes, very different, but with attentive and charming staff. The gardens are lovely in February, so they'll be a delight in the summer. I'll certainly be back many times.  more »

  • Such a Beautiful place. Amazing for an afternoon tea or even a wedding! The grounds are perfectly designed and varied and the staff are superb and friendly! The food is beautiful and if you get to eat outside in the sun there's no place better. The house itself is beautiful and the historic old hall is amazing for a reception, with the candles lit it is so atmospheric. It's a must visit if you're in Durham whether its summer or 'Christmas at Crook Hall'.
  • Fantastic place, we go here again and again (making annual membership a bargain). The food is great too, especially the afternoon tea or the gardener's lunch. Only downside is that it's not open on Saturdays (weddings).
  • Quintessential Afternoon Tea! Wonderful heritage house and gardens!
  • Very nice place to visit cafe at the entrance if you have awalking mobility it is difficult as it is built on a hill
  • Lovely, quiet Caffè close to Durham City centre
