Broughty Castle, Dundee

4.3
#4 of 13 in Museums in Dundee
Perched on a point surrounded by the waters of the Firth of Tay, Broughty Castle stands as a survivor of multiple battles, sieges, and conflicts. Originally constructed at the tail end of the 15th century, this stout fortress has undergone multiple improvements and renovations throughout its history. Visit the sturdy castle and explore its museum documenting the development of the surrounding town and its people. Learn about the tumultuous years leading up to 1550, when the structure switched hands between the warring Scots, French, and English several times in a short span. Afterward, be sure to climb up to the top deck and enjoy sweeping views over the town, coast, and the Firth of Tay. • A lovely place to visit. Was quite surprised with the amount of time we spent here. We called in for quick visit just to say we had been but ended up spending the whole Sunday afternoon here. Such a relaxed friendly atmosphere to the whole place.
  • Great museum and local art gallery. Lots of local interest exhibits. Good on prehistoric times, medieval history and local artillery regiment which was based there. Viewing area at the top of the castle keep which was used in WW2 as an outpost to protect the Tay from German bombers. Highly recommended. Take care- it has a right hand turnpike stair to access the keep.
  • Beautiful river side castle. Environment is astonishing. There is outdoor playground for kids. It is one of my daughter's favourite place to visit.
  • Wonderful little castle which has been maintained brilliantly. Only need around one hour here. The walk to and from the castle from Dundee is beautiful and well worth a visit. And best of all, its free.
  • The castle is tiny and quite wonderfully kept and the grounds are neat with fabulous views around the bay but the best part of Broughty Castle Museum is the museum. With several floors the museum is surprisingly big with a wealth of information and spectacular views from the top of the tower. Highly recommend this place for adults and children alike.
