4.3
#4 of 9 in Museums in Dundee
Specialty Museum Museum
Perched on a point surrounded by the waters of the Firth of Tay, Broughty Castle stands as a survivor of multiple battles, sieges, and conflicts. Originally constructed at the tail end of the 15th century, this stout fortress has undergone multiple improvements and renovations throughout its history. Visit the sturdy castle and explore its museum documenting the development of the surrounding town and its people. Learn about the tumultuous years leading up to 1550, when the structure switched hands between the warring Scots, French, and English several times in a short span. Afterward, be sure to climb up to the top deck and enjoy sweeping views over the town, coast, and the Firth of Tay. A visit to Broughty Castle represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Dundee vacation generator to plot your vacation.

  • Visited with my family and it was a very interesting place. Views from the battlements were great. There were a lot of informative displays throughout.  more »
  • This is a surprisingly good attraction, and is also free to enter. Three floors of interesting exhibits up narrow stairs. Right on the coast by the beach. Lots of parking.  more »
  • This free exhibition if located in the historic Broughty Castle. BUT it involves climbing a narrow stone staircase so you have to be fit to appreciate it.  more »

  • Is a good wee local museum and should be given visited more and great place to view the Tay and when they are about the resident dolphin pod. The museum itself has very knowledgeable staff and is good for people of all ages. The downside are the stairs they are a little narrow and tight spiral so maybe not so great for others but don't let that put you off.
  • Great free castle to visit for tourists and locals. Amazing views over the River Tay and you might even catch a glimpse of a dolphin or 2 :)
  • Great place to visit for couples or family's. Beach is perfect for a stroll after walking around the castle which is also free admission. Great views from the observing point and and park to keep the kids amused.
  • Great for a visit but inside is not wheelchair friendly, brought Castle offers great views of the surrounding area from the top it also offers some local history with displays weapons ,wildlife in the area and how Dundee came to be broughty Castle also has a little shop, toilet and a vending tea/ coffee machine
  • Lovely place to visit. Great Sandy Beach and plenty of things for kids to do.
