Broughty Castle, Dundee

4.3
#4 of 13 in Museums in Dundee
Perched on a point surrounded by the waters of the Firth of Tay, Broughty Castle stands as a survivor of multiple battles, sieges, and conflicts. Originally constructed at the tail end of the 15th century, this stout fortress has undergone multiple improvements and renovations throughout its history. Visit the sturdy castle and explore its museum documenting the development of the surrounding town and its people. Learn about the tumultuous years leading up to 1550, when the structure switched hands between the warring Scots, French, and English several times in a short span. Afterward, be sure to climb up to the top deck and enjoy sweeping views over the town, coast, and the Firth of Tay. • Such a lovely place castle next to the beach. Kids loved exploring and really enjoyed the colouring in. great views from the Observation room. A great place to spend a couple of hours and it’s free! B...  more »
  • Already it is very difficult to find, it must navigate in dundee, there are no signs, a nightmare! On arrival we see it as more than a military fort, there's not much thing of the original castle. Despite all the setting is nice.

  • Lovely, free and plenty to see, read and appreciate historically. Dundee Council do a really nice job in running this castle. Lots for kids to enjoy, including the very narrow spiral staircase to each floor. It also has a small gift shop and toilets too. Cannot recommend enough!
  • Lovely views out over the river and the beach from the top of the tower. Interesting exhibits on several levels in the tower. Steep climb to the top so not suitable for visitors with mobility issues. Lots of things to interest kids. Friendly helpful staff.
  • Interesting museum which I suspect a large percentage of Dundonians have never thought to visit. It only took me 50 or so years! Well worth a visit.
  • Great Castle museum!! GOOD: free entry, lots for kids to do (like colouring stuff), and also lots for the family to learn about like local artists, castle life & wildlife BAD: it can be a short visit
  • My granddaughter loved it.The guys that work their are so helpful and friendly def worth a visit x
