The gardens themselves are wonderful with a spectacular layout. However it's only open once a year and the demand to visit totally gridlocks the local roads. Expect to take at least an hour to get bot...  more »

Yes its lovely. But i sort of think looking at photos online is better than the reality of queueing, waiting, no toilets etc. They need to limit numbers, get police or professionals involved to manage...  more »

  • We were blessed with great wether. This was an interesting experience in beautiful setting. My family and I thoroughly enjoyed it. However, not wheelchair friendly ( thankfully my wife and i brought slings to carry our twins, so we managed just fine )and there always seemed to be que fornthe toilets. But would recommend it.
  • Very interesting & good day out but very busy so get there early.
  • Beautiful gardens only open once a year.very busy to get in and big traffic queues.
  • Brilliant and imaginative garden surprises around every corner.
  • Having visited The Garden of Cosmic Speculation in the past, I was eager to show them to friends. We went on Sunday 30th 2017. Sadly, our visit was very disappointing. The Gardens were still attractive. However, some of the installations were looking shabby and unkempt. The worst aspect though, was the organisation. The website where I purchased my tickets mentioned that in excess of 2000 tickets had been sold. Even knowing this , there wasn't any provision made for traffic control from the A76 onto the estate. We queued for well over an hour just to leave the A76. Then we queued again to gain access to the car park. The tickets had mentioned a lack of toilets inside the Gardens and had advised us to use the portaloos in the car park. There were 3!!!! For 2500 + people!! Guess what, we queued AGAIN for 35 mins to use the loos. We finally entered the Gardens at 3 pm having left Lochmaben at 12pm. A journey that would normally take half an hour, took 3 hours. Consequently, instead of admiring the Gardens and enjoying the weather, we had to race around to make sure we saw everything in the 2 hours remaining. Then we decided to have a drink. Another 30min queue. One of our party is vegan and asked for a cup of tea on it's own. Apparently , she could only have a drink if she bought a box of cakes as well for £4.50! The boxes of cake held enough for at least 2 people. To be unable to buy a drink on its own is atrocious. There were no provisions for dogs either (water bowls, dog waste bins), although they were apparently "welcome" . I appreciate that the Gardens open in aid of charity but the organisation of the day needs some serious work. Either limit the number of tickets, or open for 2 days, as its a Bank Holiday weekend. And definitely more loos and better provision of drinks.

Where to stay in Dumfries

As Dumfries is just a small city within the Dumfries and Galloway region, the city itself is somewhat limited on places to stay. You'll find a handful of mid-range to high-end hotels in the city--if you're intent on being based in Dumfries, it's best to book early to avoid disappointment. Otherwise, there are plenty of options in nearby cities and towns such as Sanquhar, Lockerbie, Auchencairn, and Thornhill.
