  • Don't be put off, drive in and be amazed. The curators have amassed a collection that any aviation enthusiast or layman would be grateful to see. Go back nearly 80 years as you step into the ATC tower...  more »

  • Definitely worth a visit for anyone interested in aviation history, or even simply military history. The place is a proper 'old school' museum, with plenty to see and a real sense of history around every corner, and in every room. It makes a lovely change from the overly sterile environments of modern museums, and the staff are absolutely incredible. Real enthusiasts who know their stuff, and will be more than happy to help you out with anything. Their restoration of the Loch Doon Spitfire is remarkable, and worth the very reasonable entry fee alone. It's nice to hear of plans to expand and freshen things up, and I trust that this will be done without losing any of the sites' charm. Cannot recommend enough.
  • Planes and aviation history pieces. Mostly RAF and some WWII. Planes clearly suffer from outside storage, so drop by and visit the place so they can invest. Presentation of planes is good with satisfying description. Memoribilia and bits and pieces are just displayed and not extensively put into context or described. Five stars for the volunteers but only two for the rest.
  • Run by volunteers who are very friendly. Lots of old planes to see. Masses of memorabilia, engines, plane parts, photos etc. Loved the personal stories documented here. This is not the science museum so don't expect lots of interactive exhibits in a modern building. The old control tower is full of atmosphere and the models of people around the site add a bit of humour as they are old shop mannequins and the poses are not entirely appropriate. Highly recommended.
  • Really enjoyed being able to walk around the planes and my father in law who is an aviation enginneer in the Czech Republic got a real kick out of seeing all the engines on the ground floor of the control tower, spitfire is of course a must see
  • The Loch Doon Spitfire is amazing. Great story behind it's recovery and restoration. Everyone loves a Spitfire and you will love this one.

Where to stay in Dumfries

As Dumfries is just a small city within the Dumfries and Galloway region, the city itself is somewhat limited on places to stay. You'll find a handful of mid-range to high-end hotels in the city--if you're intent on being based in Dumfries, it's best to book early to avoid disappointment. Otherwise, there are plenty of options in nearby cities and towns such as Sanquhar, Lockerbie, Auchencairn, and Thornhill.
