Walled city Londonderry, Derry

4.8
#7 of 113 in Things to do in Derry
This city has an exceptional brewing & distilling heritage spanning from the brewery in Sir Henry Dowcra’s Fort in 1607, to the closure of the world-famous Watts & Company distillery in 1925.

That day in 1925 spelt the beginning of a barren period for local beers and spirits.

The beer market in particular has been consolidated and controlled by large overseas multinationals, with marketeers brewing fizzy insipid lagers.

Until now.

The Walled City Brewery will make uniquely local, premium quality, fabulously flavoursome craft beers in small artisan batches, using recipes that Masterbrewer James has been painstakingly perfecting over the last 12 years.

  • When the history is written of the religious controversies of a people and not just some sites that played a role in the formation of history are of particular importance. One of these is the walled city of Londonderry. The surrounded part of the city was the stronghold of Catholics and called that protesters who had repeatedly failed to understand ever. Internally, there are interesting museums, churches, nice buildings and squares, while the visitor can comfortably walk up walls and admire the wonderful view of the city that lies outside of them. On the walls there are many cannons, remnants of a bygone era, the era of hatred and of battles that we hope has now gone. It is worth making an even small ride onto these walls and a longer ride through the city.

  • The city of the back stand. The monuments of the freedom struggle and the famous murals are very impressive! Otherwise worth a stroll across the city wall or the peace bridge. Worth is a visit to the Columban heritage Centef.

  • A must-do walk through taking in the historic buildings especially worthwhile in a guided tour but easy to do alone too as you can't miss the history with well appointed notes of interest laid out.  more »

Where to stay in Derry

Derry, or Londonderry, town center is a lively place to stay. Although the town itself suffered during the Troubles in Northern Ireland, the center stayed safe and has thrived. Consider an inn in the town center, perhaps a building painted with one of the well-known murals. less expensive hotels are available just outside the town's central area, close enough to the main attractions for convenient access.
