Walk atop Derry's City Walls, the only completely intact ones in Ireland. They date back to the 17th century, and today give you an unobstructed perspective down onto the old town they contain. As you stroll along the 1.5-km (0.93-mi) promenade, stop to admire the four original gates and three more that the city added over the years. The Walls remain open from dawn until dusk and are free of charge. You can find plenty of seating if you need to pause during your walk. • Things as they are, 2 weeks of travel we by all Ireland, Free Derry was the highlight. The murals show the world its history of community retaliated and fight. Public complaint mixed with art. And no one should think that in Free Derry feels lived, but what exists today, in a place in which the conflict remains very much alive.

  • Beautiful City, great for shopping. I really enjoyed walking the walls and reading the plaques regarding the local history. Loads to do in the area and great places to eat. Be careful though as most are reservation only so if looking for something to eat on the spare of the moment you will struggle. If you're in northern Ireland you have to visit Derry, it's highly recommended.
  • Superb tour and great history. Go with a guide (we booked through Viator ). I don't know how busy or quiet it is normally; we did the tour on a working day at about 4.30pm and it was quiet and peaceful. Definitely worthwhile.
  • Incredible structure and history. Make sure to walk the walls with a guide or good guidebook (Rick Steve's has an included tour in his book). This is good to combine with a tour of the political murals.
  • Must do! John, our guide, was excellent. We learned so much about the history of Derry and the struggle between in Northern Ireland between the Irish and British. It really brought about a much better understanding of the situation. The tour is NOT political, but it is very fair to both sides.
  • More than I expected in a walk around the battlements and wall. Glad to have not lived in that era. I do have family that did.
