City Walls, Derry

(1,600+ reviews on the web)
Historic Walking Area Tourist Spot
Walk atop Derry's City Walls, the only completely intact ones in Ireland. They date back to the 17th century, and today give you an unobstructed perspective down onto the old town they contain. As you stroll along the 1.5-km (0.93-mi) promenade, stop to admire the four original gates and three more that the city added over the years. The Walls remain open from dawn until dusk and are free of charge. You can find plenty of seating if you need to pause during your walk. Use our Derry holiday planner to visit City Walls on your trip to Derry, and learn what else travelers and our writers recommend seeing nearby.

  • I have been in the city many times over the last 25 years and never walked round the walls. Took the family up last year and it was great well worth a visit.
  • Immersive experience. History, much of it comparitively recent, jumps out at you everywhere on the walls. From Kings William and James, to squaddies from Birmingham. All here.
  • Amazing views, amazing history, amazing people, amazing town! And got way past my step target!
  • Fantastic views of the city from the walls. Lots of historical information posted as you walk around. Allow at least 60 mins to walk around and read the plaques.
  • Great walk, stunning views & amazing history worth a visit
