City Walls, Derry

#1 of 99 in Things to do in Derry
Historic Walking Area Tourist Spot
Walk atop Derry's City Walls, the only completely intact ones in Ireland. They date back to the 17th century, and today give you an unobstructed perspective down onto the old town they contain. As you stroll along the 1.5-km (0.93-mi) promenade, stop to admire the four original gates and three more that the city added over the years. The Walls remain open from dawn until dusk and are free of charge. You can find plenty of seating if you need to pause during your walk. Use our Derry holiday planner to visit City Walls on your trip to Derry, and learn what else travelers and our writers recommend seeing nearby.

  • The wall reveals the division between a people and the pain associated with it. At face value, it's a great place. A learning experience and if we are moving freely, a humbling place. Still, it's well worth a visit.
  • A great walk around the city with lovely views. You also get a bit of history as well as there are signs along the way giving the history of that particular part of the walls. All in all a great experience.
  • These walls are seriously worth a visit! They are a couple of kilometers in circumference, and in great condition. The views are stunning and the signboards with information very informative.
  • Steeped in history. Well worth a visit for young and old alike.
  • I have been in the city many times over the last 25 years and never walked round the walls. Took the family up last year and it was great well worth a visit.

Where to stay in Derry

Derry, or Londonderry, town center is a lively place to stay. Although the town itself suffered during the Troubles in Northern Ireland, the center stayed safe and has thrived. Consider an inn in the town center, perhaps a building painted with one of the well-known murals. less expensive hotels are available just outside the town's central area, close enough to the main attractions for convenient access.
