Markeaton Park, Derby

(3.9/5 based on 160+ reviews on the web)
Markeaton is a suburban village within Derby in the East Midlands of England. It is in the Mackworth Ward of Derby City Council. The village lies on the narrow Markeaton Lane road. The name is derived from Old English "Mearca's Farm". The spelling was Marcheton in 1086.After the Norman conquest the manor of Markeaton which had been held by the Anglo-Saxon Siward, the Fairbairn Earl of Northumbria, was given to Hugh d'Avranches, 1st Earl of Chester, along with chevinetum, Mackworth and Allestree. It finally passed to John the Earl of Huntingdon and Cambridge who died in 1237, his only heirs being his sisters. To prevent the estate passing to women, it was bought by the Crown in 1246. It was held by various members of the Royal family, including the Black Prince until his death in 1376 when it returned to the Crown. In the early 14th century the Mundy Family purchased land, Sir John Mundy was Lord Mayor of the City of London in 1522. The village land was enclosed by the Mundys during the 18th century, forcing many of the villagers to move their homes (literally "Up Sticks") outside the enclosed land.Markeaton HallA grand house, Markeaton Hall was built in a traditional half timbered style, this was replaced by a new hall during the late 18th century.

  • Order a Cumberland sausage from children's menu. My 3 year old daughter nearly choked on a half inch cocktail stick end left in the sausage. I told the bar staff who initially offered a free drink which I declined. They then spoke with the kitchen staff and offered a very hollow apology and explained that it must have been left in the sausage, leaving us with the impression that we should not really bothered them with the issue. It was not their fault it was actually the foods fault. How silly of us! Immediately after that they brought out the wrong dessert! I felt it necessary to update this review after the response from the manager below. Mistakes are made it is irrelevant whether it was a supplier issue or the kitchen missing the wooden spike in my child's food which I had to remove from her mouth after she tried swallowing it. The negative review was due to the fact that we were given a 'so what' response when we raised the issue. This is compounded by the fact that in the managers response they had not realised the seriousness of the complaint...because at the time the staff couldn't have given a monkeys! No one even asked if she was okay. If a customer told me that their daughters food had a dangerous item in it I would be falling over myself to make up for it and not attempt to lay blame with a supplier, and yes this will prevent me coming back to the Markeaton
  • Great service. Very friendly and helpful. Nice pub. Standard Ember Inns menu but the food is definitely better than either Broadway or Hollybrook in my opinion.
  • Good food at affordable prices and friendly atmosphere. Fixed price menu very good for the price.
  • Terrible service at the bar, not that busy but bar person just kept serving regulars, five people arrived after me and she served all of them first, people I was with were all laughing, finally had to say something, first time in my life I've complained to bar staff. Got a thunderous look but at least I got served!
  • nearly £7 for two pints. my chicken wings were greasy not crispy. lasagna was square and in a circle pot. tasted 6/10, presentation 3/10
