I've been as an adult before and loved the house and contents, but I was impressed by how much the young children enjoyed their visit. The house is not too big and the inter-connecting rooms made it p...  more »

A rare treat to experience this wonderful house and art in almost a time warp from when Munnings was alive. The volunteers were great with our young children too.  more »

Just loved this place. A beautiful building full of Munnings' works. I hadn't realised the breadth of his talent. Well worth a visit - plenty of parking.  more »

  • Delicious food served in an idyllic setting. A selection of mouth watering light lunches which can be accompanied by interesting and flavoursome alcoholic drinks. Efficient and friendly staff who compliment the ambience of the peaceful, rural surroundings. An ideal way to end a visit to the museum.
  • Sir Alfred Munnings was an exceptionally gifted painter and sculptor. There is a good selection of his work here and you can see the studio where he worked. The independently run Cafe on the site is very good and open all year around. Shame he isn't as well known as Constable. Well worth a visit, but check opening times for the Gallery. From the 1st April opening times run from Wednesday to Sunday inclusive from 14:00 to 17:00 plus Bank Holidays. Update 31st October 2014:- The cafe has now closed. Hopefully someone else will take it on as it was a sorely needed addition to the Munnings "Offerings".
  • My wife and I have lived in the village of Dedham for over 30yrs and have visited the museum only a few times and enjoyed it each time, Recently we heard on the grape vine that a new cafe had just open and we thought we would give it a go. What a little treasure we found "The garden cafe" to be. Lovely light lunches, my wife had pan fried sea bass and I went for local ham and salad...it was delightful. Combined with a visit to the museum and surrounding garden it does not get much better.
  • Exquisite brushstrokes and an instinctive master of tone and colour. Jaw dropping horse sculptures. Superb pencil drawings even from an early age. Sir Alfred Munnings was surely the best British painter of the 20th Century. Great museum with very friendly staff, and with delicious cakes the cafĂ© shouldn't be missed either!

Where to stay in Colchester

A short train ride from London, Colchester is a university and working town. Hotels in the town center are near the main attractions, but for less expensive lodging consider a room near the university campus, which is situated in a tree-filled parkland.
