Where to stay in Colchester

A short train ride from London, Colchester is a university and working town. Hotels in the town center are near the main attractions, but for less expensive lodging consider a room near the university campus, which is situated in a tree-filled parkland.

  • Firstly, it's too expensive for what you get and the short amount of time it takes to get round the garden. I'm 25 and I went with my girlfriend, It's £5 each, and it's basically a large garden which has set paths going around it with various different well known gnomes and groups of gnomes doing different things. I think it took us about 30 minutes to slow walk around the garden, and we both felt it should be free to entry. You can paint a gnome at the end for £6, which for us we didn't think was worth it. Yes it's cute and funny at times, but we would not recommend it.
  • CASH ONLY which if you're not prepared for is a hassle. We absolutely loved it (3 26year olds). The lady who runs it was lovely and helpful. There are a few paths to walk down and you could miss some gnomes if you don't realise it. We went on a crisp autumn day and all the acorns were falling off the trees and because we were the only ones there it made it feel more magical. There are so many different type of gnomes and each section had its own reason to love it. The afternoon tea we had was quite possibly the best we've ever had and at £5 it's the cheapest we've had. The scone was huge, the tea per person was about 2.5cups. We painted a gnome and that was just a lovely way to end the day. It's worth the visit just for the scones!!!
  • Great for a walk in the woods, quite a unique place.
  • I was skeptical. I mean gnomes. I'm with Grandpa Pig on this subject. But the kids love it and there's gnome painting and a velociraptor and chocolate cake. And gnomes in every shape size and variety. Nick Clegg is even here. Well he had to end up somewhere.
  • Love it. GO!
