#1 of 34 in Things to do in Dartmouth
Garden Historic Site
Inspired by the Arts and Crafts and Art Deco design movements, Coleton Fishacre is the epitome of fine craftsmanship and style. The house has been featured twice in Country Life magazine as the ideal in tasteful country living. The property extends all the way to the nearby sea and includes exotic gardens planted by the house's first owner, Lady Dorothy Carte. In fact, Lady Carte hired a staff of six to care for the gardens while there were only four staff members for the house. Purchase tickets  on site from the National Trust staff. • This was a surprise gem and well worth the visit. We almost didn't go because the various guides under sold its virtues. The house was a stunning Art Deco example and the grounds so colourful and well...  more »
  • Originally this was the home of the D'Oyly Carte family and its full of fabulous art deco furniture and items. The grounds were just beautiful too.  more »
  • Fabulous garden, stunning colours. Need to be fairly fit to climb back up to the house. Interesting house and lovely place for lunch.  more »

  • Spectacular gardens, there is a walk down to a lookout point that is really worth doing. The house is well presented with breif information sheets in each room, but she always the room guides are available to provide more details. I would highly recommend a visit.
  • Lovely house decorated in the original art-deco style and when we were there a "DJ" playing 78s from the period. Very informative staff in many rooms. Reasonable cafe which probably struggles to sit everyone in the summer but was very tidy when we were there. Grounds are lovely, not much out in February but obviously a lot of work has and is being expended with a stream running right down the middle of the valley from the house to the cliffs at the bottom. The paths are a mixture of steps and flat surfaces. Lovely half day out.
  • One of our favourite places, especially in the bluebell season. Challengingly steep paths but worth the effort. Beautiful coastal views. Interesting house and close to Brixham. Great place for a picnic, but £7.95 for a pasty & side salad at the cafe? Highly recommended!
  • Absolutely beautiful gardens although steep valley so not ideal for disabled. At the bottom go through the gate and go right on the footpath for a short distance for a lovely view of the sea.
  • Beautiful gardens but possibly could make disabled visitors feel a bit more comfortable, being sent to the bottom dining room and a book being put into my hands is not the nicest of visits I've had.
