Blackpool Sands, Dartmouth

3.6
#2 of 12 in Outdoors in Dartmouth
With fine sand and turquoise blue waters, Blackpool Sands lays claim as one of South Devon's most spectacular tourist sites. The beach receives daily cleaning during the summer months. Swim in the clean, clear waters or, if you are more adventurous, hire a sea kayak or a boogie board. The beach offers shower and toilet facilities, including disabled facilities. Lifeguards are on duty, but only during the summer season. Enjoy an organic meal made with local produce in the Venus Beach cafe. For a change from the beach, visit the Blackpool Gardens and explore the paths through the trees and shrubs as you enjoy views of the sea. The garden is open between April and September. • It was a nice beach though we went in a wintry weather. There is a cafe around which was decent. We expected fine Sands but it was pebbles. In summer it will be good I think.  more »
  • We visited on a day that was blowing an absolute gale, but still enjoyed it! Worth popping into the Venus cafe for a hot chocolate afterwards! Parking free at this time of year.  more »
  • Lovely beach in a beautiful part of Devon, big, wonderful for walking and quiet coves at either end where you can tuck yourself out of the wind. The vegetation is pretty exotic which is reflected by t...  more »

  • A very clean and easy to access beach with a beautiful view. The first thing to note about this beach, and dont be misled by the name or any of the pictures on Google, is that this is NOT a sandy beach. It appears that this is an artificially created beach where there have been thousands of tonnes of small stones and pebbles used to create a sand effect. It looks nice. But it bloody hurts to walk on bare foot and is annoying if you wear something on your feet as you end up sinking and getting a shoe full of tiny pebbles. The second thing to note is that parking for the day will cost you £8. Bring cash because the car park does not have a ticket machine just a bloke with a roll of tickets and a bag of cash. There are cliffs to either side of the bay and these are full of rock pools to explore with the kids. There are toilets on site and a restaurant also but I never visited it. Overall a nice clean beach but would look for somewhere more sandy in future.
  • Beautiful beach. great view. N blue sea.... we loved it. it's a pebbles beach . Best of all... no dogs allowed.
  • Great for walking on the beach and the cafe is really good and staff were very friendly and helpful would go there again
  • Open 9am-6pm £4 to park the car. A beautiful shingle beach go early and spend the day! Food at the beach cafe well recommended.
  • Why pay £8 for a pebbly beach? When there are better sandy beaches all over Devon and Cornwall, where parking cost half the amount. Venus cafes coffee is awful. Didn't stay long, won't be back.
