Shopping Mall
Cwmbran Shopping Centre is a shopping centre owned by Prudential in the town of Cwmbran, Torfaen. As a New Town the town centre was planned in a single Master Plan along with the surrounding residential neighbourhoods. It is the second largest shopping centre in Wales. The Cwmbran Development Corporation prepared the Master Plan for the development of the New Town which resulted in the creation of the original seven neighbourhoods which contained some local services, and housing and were located within easy reach of the Town Centre. The early years of the New Town were dominated by housebuilding with a lack of services for the town. It was not until 1959 that construction of the central retail area began, despite the fact that considerations of its design began in 1951. The Town Centre was developed as a purpose-built central area by the Development Corporation and the Town Centre has been the focal point for retail development in Torfaen since its inception as a New Town.Gwent Square was the first area to be constructed. In 1964, David Evans opened – this was the largest department store in Cwmbran at the time. By the late 1960s the area surrounding Gwent Square was built upon. General Rees Square was named after General Wynford Rees, a Commander of the British Indian Army, Deputy Lieutenant of Monmouthshire and First Manager of the Cwmbran Development Corporation. He died in 1959 and so was unable to see the Town Centre fully completed. In 1972 the Congress Theatre was built alongside Gwent House in Gwent Square.

  • Just how shops should be: FREE PARKING, easy access and "man friendly". Meaning, if you know what you want you can be in and out in ten minutes. Cwmbran wins for convenience and has a selection of smaller department stores. While they may not have everything, there is enough.
  • It has a good range of well known shops from cheap products to high end brands. It has good transportation links but not quite a exciting shopping centre, better disabled and elderly transport and assistance and it could be better with easier access to nearby shopping facilities such as Cwmbran retail park and sainsbury which is nearby.
  • Not the biggest shopping centre in the world, not a great deal there to be honest. It's always clean and pleasant, but it's in a small town centre so check that you can get what you need before you go there
  • With many shops to choose from and plenty of activities held regularly, cwmbran shopping center is a safe and diverse place to shop.
  • Good range of shops with nearly all walkable whilst undercover. Free parking available in variously placed car parks, but do watch that some of these are limited to 4 hours. Parking spaces are a bit tight and at peak times are hard to find. All car parks have a number of disabled spots available with good disabled access throughout the town. One multi storey car park on the edge of the town has no lift. Good shopping experience and the place to go when raining.
