Cwmbran Shopping Centre is a shopping centre owned by Prudential in the town of Cwmbran, Torfaen. As a New Town the town centre was planned in a single Master Plan along with the surrounding residential neighbourhoods. It is the second largest shopping centre in Wales. The Cwmbran Development Corporation prepared the Master Plan for the development of the New Town which resulted in the creation of the original seven neighbourhoods which contained some local services, and housing and were located within easy reach of the Town Centre. The early years of the New Town were dominated by housebuilding with a lack of services for the town. It was not until 1959 that construction of the central retail area began, despite the fact that considerations of its design began in 1951. The Town Centre was developed as a purpose-built central area by the Development Corporation and the Town Centre has been the focal point for retail development in Torfaen since its inception as a New Town.Gwent Square was the first area to be constructed. In 1964, David Evans opened – this was the largest department store in Cwmbran at the time. By the late 1960s the area surrounding Gwent Square was built upon. General Rees Square was named after General Wynford Rees, a Commander of the British Indian Army, Deputy Lieutenant of Monmouthshire and First Manager of the Cwmbran Development Corporation. He died in 1959 and so was unable to see the Town Centre fully completed. In 1972 the Congress Theatre was built alongside Gwent House in Gwent Square.

  • Being just down the road helps but so does the free parking. Decent range of shops, usually only go on a Sunday when its quieter and easier to park
  • I find Cwmbran shopping centre ideal. Free parking, a good array of shops and not bad food outlets. Would avoid trying to park via Asda, just go straight into the multi storey car park.
  • Great place to find most of what you are looking for, lots and lots of great shops lovely places to eat and very friendly and helpful people.
  • First time that I have actually shopped here....didn't realise how big it was and that there were so many shops....well worth a visit if you haven't been already.
  • Very busy place, all the shops you can think of in one place and ALL kinds of food as well. For parking you will need a lot of patience, you can easily spend a whole day here - split it between shopping, cinema, eating out and then some more shopping. Mrs will love it ;)
  • Parking can be a bit of a nightmare on popular shopping days but the fact you can park for free is great. Being able to shop undercover is also a bonus. Shops wise there is a decent enough selection for a local shopping centre but could definitely do with a more independent presence.
  • Free parking, wide variety of shops , good wheelchair access and you can walk around without getting wet but a bit dated
  • Clean & tidy with no unsociable people asking for your charity, a pleasure to walk & shop around in peace.
