Killhope Lead Mining Museum Reviews

Killhope really does bring history to life. There is something for all ages, a mine tour, museum, video show, walk around the mine buildings and workings, a lovely little cafe and an amazing red squir... more »
Killhope (pronounced Kill-up) is an absolutely fantastic day out. There are various things to do here, including an indoor exhibition, a mine tour, outdoor play areas and various bits of working machinery to see, as well as a nature area. Our mine tour guide, Julie was friendly and knowledgeable. Wellies and warm socks are available for the mine tour, which are really necessary because you're often walking through a couple of inches of water. Also, the air can feel very close, almost suffocating when you're down there. I've been in other caves and mines and been fine; for some reason I wasn't such a fan of being inside this one! I did stick it out though. The information in the exhibition is really great, and many jargon words you'll hear (e.g. Galena) are explained in the museum if you don't feel like asking. One of the real highlights for me was the opportunity to see red squirrels up close - we saw 5 or 6 entertaining us for the best part of 30 mins. As far as a wet weather activity goes, it's not perfect; bits are outside and you have to walk between places, but some areas are inside. As a general activity, it's excellent. Informative, good value (tickets are valid for a year), and well presented. Recommended!
A great place to visit. A really interesting museum with lots of hands on activities and a very informative tour of the lead mine by enthusiastic, knowledgeable staff. The cafe sells freshly made food and delicious cakes at very reasonable prices. Well worth a visit.
Stumbled upon this place whilst travelling home. Didn't have enough time to explore it properly. Went around the mine tour which is breathtaking. Lovely lady called Terry showed us all the way around. Cold, wet, damp but whst an experience. The tickets are a reasonable and they last a year so you can visit anytime. There are also yurts so you can stay there as well. That's got to be worth a try. Free car parking amazing stuff well worth a visit. Didn't have enough time to try the cafe. Next time
A really interesting place to visit with very friendly staff. The trip down the mine is great and the museum provides wellies. Lots of activities linked to mining for the kids to do. The conservation area is a bit short on trees but I did manage to see a red squirrel from the hide
We stayed in one of the 6 person yurts which was fantastic. There was more than enough space for the 6 of us. In the yurt was a wood burning stove (for heat only), a water dispenser and lighting and sockets. A word of warning - the sockets are low ampage only so if you want a cuppa before the cafe opens at 10.30 make sure you take a gas stove. We then visited the museum the next day (included in the price!). A cracking day, the kids loved searching for shiny stones more than anything. I thought the mine tour was excellent and watching the blacksmith at work was very interesting.
