Coldingham Priory, Coldingham
Categories: Churches, Tourist Spots
Visit Coldingham Priory, an ancient Christian site that once served as a Benedictine monastery, but today is mostly in ruins. Founded during the reign of David I in 1139, the priory was largely destroyed by Oliver Cromwell in 1648. Nonetheless, the choir has remained and serves as Coldingham's parish church--the only major medieval church in the area to continue active use. Visit the site to view the existing outer walls and archway, where some information boards give you more information and history. Take some time to explore the garden around the church, which grows plants for medicinal, culinary, and aromatic purposes.
