Coldingham Priory, Coldingham

4.6
#21 of 26 in Historic Sites in Scottish Borders
Church Tourist Spot
Visit Coldingham Priory, an ancient Christian site that once served as a Benedictine monastery, but today is mostly in ruins. Founded during the reign of David I in 1139, the priory was largely destroyed by Oliver Cromwell in 1648. Nonetheless, the choir has remained and serves as Coldingham's parish church--the only major medieval church in the area to continue active use. Visit the site to view the existing outer walls and archway, where some information boards give you more information and history. Take some time to explore the garden around the church, which grows plants for medicinal, culinary, and aromatic purposes. • A historic place of worship founded around 1000 and with a turbulent history. Destroyed by Cromwell. Rebuilt on a smaller scale. Now used as a place of worship. Open to the public Wednesday afternoons May to September for guided tours. Vast graveyard and the perfect spot to start if you are tracing ancestors from the region.
  • Fantastic place full of history, templars gravestones and more
