  • I consider myself very lucky to live in a town with such an amazing, beautiful park. Set on the grounds of a Norman castle (a wonderful place to visit also), the Castle Park is beautifully maintained and well set out. There are benches to sit on all around the park. There is also a wonderful play area for children. The pond at the top recently had a lot of the fish killed. It is still a lovely place to sit and read or eat lunch. The park is divided into two, the upper and lower park. The upper does not allow dogs. The lower park (a very large hill between the two) has wide open spaces and does allow dogs. There is a boating lake as well. If you are visiting Colchester, I highly recommend a visit to the park.
  • Awesome castle, beautiful gardens and a play park for children. Bandstand, ice cream parlour and tearooms. Castle has admittance fee but worth every penny. Pond with seating around to watch the beautiful fish on a nice day. All areas have benches to sit on and take in the spectacular areas of grass to picnic on and beautiful flower beds. A joy to the eye no matter what time of year !!
  • A true gem, the gardens (especially around the Castle) are exquisite! There always seems to be a themed display which is executed with such precision. You can always find something going on in the main park, and there is a great play area for kids of all ages. You could easily spend the whole day here
  • Nice place for families. Great food and drink and other festivals. Castle well worth a visit and open air screen for tennis/films in the summer months with alcohol designated area.
  • Fantastic day out, so much information I did not know, with showcases inside to view. Take a guided tour, well worth it (John) the guide has a passion and sense of humour that makes it enjoyable. Lovely gardens outside, best on a sunny day.

Where to stay in Colchester

A short train ride from London, Colchester is a university and working town. Hotels in the town center are near the main attractions, but for less expensive lodging consider a room near the university campus, which is situated in a tree-filled parkland.
