Ingleborough Cave, Clapham

Must see · Cave · Nature / Park
Ingleborough Cave (formerly known as Clapham Caves) is a show cave close to the village of Clapham in North Yorkshire, England adjacent to where the water from Gaping Gill resurges.

That part of the cave which is open to the public follows a fossil gallery for some 500 metres (1,640 ft). The passage is spacious, and well decorated with stalagmitic formations.

Beyond the show cave, the fossil gallery continues until it meets the main stream. The water can be followed upstream through passages under Trow Gill, to where it emerges from a sump at Terminal Lake which has been connected by divers to Gaping Gill, and followed downstream into Lake Pluto which has been connected by divers to Beck Head Stream Cave.

A connection has also been made with Fox Holes, a cave near Trow Gill.

A small stream in the show cave drops into a rift called the Abyss. An underwater connection has been made between the passage at the bottom and Beck Head Cave, the resurgence for the Gaping Gill water.

  • Enjoyed the walk through the estate to reach the caves and booked into the tour. The guide was really informative and entertaining. There are some areas of the cave that have low ceilings and you have to crouch and walk through them, so maybe not ideal for people with mobility issues, but dogs, prams and wheelchairs are allowed
  • Lovely visit to the cave. Fairly easy access although you still need hard hats as there are a couple of low height sections. They allow dogs and pushchairs which was a nice change too. Tours were every 30mins as this was peak summer holidays, usually every hour. Tour lasted an hour, was interesting from the guide to hear how the show caves have developed since they were first opened in 1837 and just how old the caves are. The best formations to see were the Gothic Arches and cityscape. And if you can sing well there might be a chance to share! There is a little shop near the entrance to buy tickets, ice cream and drinks. Its a fresh 8deg inside but this was comfortable after the effort of the walk up and in the sunshine. You'll want decent shoes as there are wet floors in many places, you might also want a coat on as its a bit chilly. The photos on line look good but don't seem to do the caves justice, they look better in the "rock"!
  • Wonderful tour of these impressive caves. The formations and caverns make the entrance fee seem reasonable, the guide was excellent, informative and amusing. £9 admission, my only criticism would be the feeling that maybe an extra 10 - 15 minutes would stop you feeling slightly rushed. Still interesting and well worth a visit.
  • Very good day out. I took a group of young people on a planned trip. They had a great day and the guide was brilliant. Very funny and informative. The walk up to it was lovely too, not too hard
  • We loved it.. oldest kid 18 and youngest twins 14 months.. beautiful walk up to the caves , interesting and friendly tour guide. We will back when girls are older to see it all again.
