  • If you visit the Old Hall be sure to get the £1 audio guide as it makes the ruined building 'come alive' . I saw people walking round without it giving everything a cursory look but there is so much m...  more »
  • An English Heritage site, a very interesting place. There is still some of the original plasterwork in place. You will need a good imagination to visualise how the hall would have looked. It was built...  more »
  • We really enjoyed our walk of the ruins. We probably wouldn't go to see just the old hall but being NT members we gave it a go & we weren't disappointed. It's very interesting to learn the back story ...  more »

  • Absolutely stunning. The old graffiti was a favourite. Goes back to war time and victorian times.
  • Well worth a visit & the climb to the top rewards you with fantastic views.
  • Lovely place, good little visitors centre and shop with access to the ruin of the hall that Bess of Hardwick abandoned for the new house. national Trust members get in for free which is a bonus.
  • Great little hall, although you kind of feel like peasants visiting this whilst people with more money visit the 'new hall' with actual windows and a roof. Definitely worth a trip to and there are stairs inside so you can get up to the top. If you're an English Heritage member, remember that you get free parking, so don't let the National Trust troll on the gate tell you differently.
  • Join national trust! You can visit both halls. More to do as well.
