Tropical Wings Zoo, Chelmsford

(4.3/5 based on 800+ reviews on the web)
Converted from a greenhouse to a butterfly house in 1999, Tropical Wings Zoo is also home to reptiles, meerkats and wallabies. Enjoy the sensation of butterflies landing on you and seize the opportunity to photograph one. Feed the fish and laugh at the antics of the parrots. You will not require a whole day to explore, so stop in at the cafe, shop, and let the children enjoy the play areas, with Mr. Macawber’s Fun House and Monkey Run for older children and the Meer Kat Lookout for toddlers. Walking outdoors can be tricky when muddy. Get there by bus, train, car, or bike. Parking is free. • All round great place to visit, a small zoo with a variety of small animals and birds. One of the main attractions is the Butterfly Emporium, where guest roam through an open area and interact with the wildlife that include butterflies, fish and birds. The children's play area in the centre of the zoo has a wide selection of climbing frames and slides, with the soft play area inside suitable for smaller children as there is a maximum height limit on it. The zoo is well kept, maintained and clean, it hosts many activities throughout the day, including animal interaction shows, information shows and feeding sessions. The cafe is very reasonably priced, and plenty of seating available with highchairs nearby, perfect for the rest stop for parents. Overall a good place, I would suggest the cafe and public areas would require updating, but aside from that I would highly recommend Tropical Wings Zoo for anyone who would like a zoo experience without paying extortionate prices. A family of four can attend the zoo all day and eat lunch on site for less than £60.00.
  • Lovely couple of hours spent here. Plenty to do for our small granddaughter and plenty also for us oldies to see and learn the butterflies were fabulous and it was great to see all the animals well housed and we'll cared for. Far better value for money in our opinion than the other local animal attraction. Thank you for a lovely experience.
  • My husband and I visited today and loved it, a great little trip out - perfect if you have a few hours spare. It cost us £20 to get in so it's affordable as well. This is only a small zoo, we spent maybe two hours there, but there is plenty to see. We really enjoyed the tropical house, the lady in there was really informative and told us all about the different butterflies and caterpillars. Staff are friendly and there's plenty of places to eat and have a picnic.
  • A fantastic day out! We found it very relaxing to walk around the well kept, laid out grounds. I would say very good value for money, especially as we enjoyed the talks/feeds about a selection of some of the animals. The staff were very pleasant and enthusiastic about the animals, which was nice to see. The butterfly house was our highlight.......lovely to just sit there and soak up the atmosphere. Overall...........a great little Zoo! Thank you :o)
  • A firm favourite with my little ones. Plenty to see and excellent value for money. We are regular visitors
