Hylands House, Chelmsford

4.2
Hylands House is a Grade II* neo-classical villa situated within Hylands Park a 232-hectare (574 acre) park south-west of Chelmsford in Essex in South East England. It is owned and operated by Chelmsford City Council.HistoryThe last private owner lived in Hylands House until her death until 1962. It was in 1966, with the House in a desperate state of disrepair, that Chelmsford Borough Council purchased the Park for the people of Chelmsford to enjoy. Hylands Park was opened to the public only 10 days later. It was agreed by Chelmsford Borough Council that Hylands House should be restored to its former glory and having stood empty for 20 years, the first phase of restoration took place in 1986. The final stage was completed in 2005.Past owners of Hylands HouseSir John Comyns 1730–1740Around 1726, a local and well respected lawyer, Sir John Comyns, purchased the manor of Shaxstones in Writtle, and commissioned the construction of a new family home on the estate, suitable for a man of his standing. Completed in 1730, Hylands House was an elegant two-storey red brick building in Queen Anne style architecture. The grounds were set out in the formal geometric style fashionable at the time, with a pleasure garden and small kitchen garden to the north of the house.John Comyns 1740–1760 & John Richard Comyns 1760–1797Sir John Comyns died in 1740, without surviving children, and left the estate to his nephew, John Comyns of Romford. In 1759, John Comyns commissioned a monument to the life of his beloved uncle, which can be seen at the family vault in Writtle Church. John in turn left Hylands to his son, John Richard Comyns in 1760.

Hylands is well worth a visit - but do check opening hours on Chelmsford City Council's website. The House is definitely open on the Heritage Days of 10th and 11th September when entry is free and you...  more »

  • Great place to let the dogs run wild and free, a few walking tracks to choose from which are different lengths, there are clear signs where you have to put your dog back on the lead, lovely gardens to walk around with family. FREE parking, there is a dog friendly cafe but it was closed when we went so can't review the food. But will definitely be going back there to walk the dogs again :)
  • Beautiful building which is always kept in pristine condition! I like to this of it as our version of America's White House. Right next door is the Stables Centre where you can have reasonably priced drinks from the cafe, and visit one of the craft centres around the grounds. The park is always well kept and is always lovely to visit in the summer with the family.
  • love visiting Hylands House/grounds. Excellent dog walking in the extensive park. Nice cafe to have a light lunch and a coffee. I would have awarded a five star, however, dog walkers do not have an indoor or covered area to eat/drink, also the toilets are in an area you cant take your dog....so lone walkers have a real problem!(I refuse to tie up my dog and leave her unattended.) For this reason I have also been unable to visit their courtyard gift shops.
  • The venue and whole park very tidy all round. Brilliant place for relaxing walk or picnic. Decent coffee shop nearby.
  • Beautiful old estate. The dining room is really lavish with gold golfing and old paintings in the wall. Celebrated a wonderful Golden Wedding Amniversary here yesterday. Great food too and lovely service. Make sure to go into the basement to see some of the old features of the house.
