Treak Cliff Cavern, Castleton
(4.5/5 based on 340+ reviews on the web)
Treak Cliff Cavern is a show cave near Castleton in Derbyshire, England. It is part of the Castleton Site of Special Scientific Interest and one of only two sites where the ornamental mineral Blue John is still excavated (the other is the nearby Blue John Cavern). As part of an agreement with English Nature, the Blue John that can be seen in the show cave is not mined but it is extracted in small quantities from other areas of the cave and made into saleable items like bowls, jewellery and ornaments. The cave comprises two sections, the Old Series, discovered by lead miners in the 18th century, and the New Series, discovered during blasting in the 1920s. Only the Old Series contains Blue John, but the New Series is well decorated with flowstone, stalagmites and stalactites. Three human skeletons and flint implements from the Neolithic era were found in a small cave nearby in 1921.

  • Great to visit again after more than 45 years. Well presented tour and knowledgeable and friendly guide.
  • This is one of the better caverns, bit of a walk from the village but worth the walk. It is really interesting and the guides really know their stuff. Once you get passed the low bit when you go in, d...  more »
  • What an interesting place. It appears to be little more than a wooden shack on the side of the hill but once inside you will be amazed at this quite spectacular attraction. The staff and guides really...  more »

  • This is great. A reasonable price (cheaper than the nearby caves). Really friendly staff (the nicest I've met in a long time, anywhere). Not suitable for disabled. Pushchairs also. (There are hundreds of steps) perfectly safe walking around the caves though. Young children managed fine. Toilets have no running tap. They make a lovely cuppa though. Highly recommend this visit.
  • Good value, interesting and informative tour of the caves and mines. Excellent and cheap opportunity for kids to polish their own but of Blue John. A great set weather activity.
  • The cavern was lovely when we went, and we did the 'polish your own blue john' which was good fun, and great value for the experience, and the fact that many of the chunks looked very pretty, despite the low price. A good activity for both kids and adults.
  • A short tour (¬£9.50) through some very interesting and amazing caverns. Worth a visit for some history of the past and great pictures. Guides were more than happy to answer our questions and were friendly :)
  • Again another good place to visit with good caves and some nice storys etc
