Treak Cliff Cavern, Castleton

Cave · Nature / Park
Treak Cliff Cavern is a show cave near Castleton in Derbyshire, England. It is part of the Castleton Site of Special Scientific Interest and one of only two sites where the ornamental mineral Blue John is still excavated (the other is the nearby Blue John Cavern). As part of an agreement with English Nature, the Blue John that can be seen in the show cave is not mined but it is extracted in small quantities from other areas of the cave and made into saleable items like bowls, jewellery and ornaments.
The cave comprises two sections, the Old Series, discovered by lead miners in the 18th century, and the New Series, discovered during blasting in the 1920s. Only the Old Series contains Blue John, but the New Series is well decorated with flowstone, stalagmites and stalactites. Three human skeletons and flint implements from the Neolithic era were found in a small cave nearby in 1921.

  • I haven't been down the cavern myself but the gift shop is to die for! Truly stunning and well displayed healing crystals and minerals. The best price too! So cheap! Great staff. Worth the walk up to just for a look.
  • This is such an interesting and unusual place. The guide was really lovely and explained things well. I was appreciative that we could go at our own pace and didn't feel pressured to keep up. The gift shop has a good price range of souvenirs. The kids were happy they could afford something. The museum is tiny but very interesting. We also polished our own blue John stone which was good fun. It's a bit difficult to get up the hill to begin (if you have any joint or muscle issues) but the tour is much easier to do. I have no idea how you'd get there if you were in a wheelchair. Great views from the gallery. It's a really nice place to take kids.
  • Accessable via steps only. The whole experience was great, with a very informative guide carefully explains the formation of Blue John, it's history and the present day mining of the rate mineral. There is also the chance to polish up your own piece of Blue John, at extra cost, as well as the usual gift shop and cafe. The cafe sells read and coffees made with the water collected from the mine, an usual touch but as there's no mains water is the only way to do it.
  • Great service and kind. The catacombs are interesting and the tour is great with interesting facts. The pricing is o.k but is worth doing if you want a great experience tour of cave's/catacombs. So if you want to have a interesting day out go ahead and try this activity . Be warned if you live far away the drive Will be long.
  • You simply must visit, in fact you should spend the day, maybe 2 and visit all the caves in the area as these are truly wonders of the world right here in England. At one time this was used to mine Blue John a rare semiprecious stone. The village of Castleton had shops selling very large vases and bowl's made of Blue John but now only sell tiny bits of it set in rings. Go and you will not be disappointed. Should have said go to the cave n you won't be disappointed, try finding a beautiful large piece of carved blue john and you probably will be
