Carlisle Cathedral, Carlisle

4.5
Soak in medieval history while exploring 900-year-old Carlisle Cathedral. Adorned with original Gothic architecture and stone carvings, the cathedral houses England’s largest glass window in the Flowing Decorated style. Admire the colorful barrel ceiling above the main sanctuary, or attend a service to enjoy classical organ and choir music. You can explore all parts of the cathedral free of charge, including a library, the treasury, and a small gift shop. Venture across the street to have lunch in the old monk’s dining hall, now a cafe. • This is a beautiful old cathedral in the downtown area of Carlisle. Over 900 years old and still a "working" church. Cathedral grounds are quite massive but didn't get a chance to visit the cemetery, always a favourite to check out the history There are a number of out buildings all around, probably the rectory and residences. Definitely worth a look see if you're in the area.
  • Beautifully kept cathedral. Ornate stonework and an amazingly painted ceiling in the nave make this a must see. Happy to donate to visit and take photographs.
  • I love the Cathedral, I really do. Stunning architecture, great views, quite friendly priests. However, I went to the Friday night bell-ringing practice (after a beautiful Evensong I might add!)... The tower secretary whom I had contacted was very welcoming, and seemed genuinely happy to have visitors. However, when I grabbed the rope for the tenor, an old man came right over, and said 'I'll take that, thank you!'. When I didn't he immediately said 'Were you ASKED to ring that bell?!', and pushed me away from it. It ruined my entire experience, and I felt shunned and ashamed. I would suggest that the Cathedral finds a new face as chief of it's bell-ringing staff. -=(+)=- On a lighter note, Do visit if you're in the area! It has some great features and the Cathedral staff are fairly friendly (compared to some c:)
  • Loved it. Keep calm and go to Evensong. Check out the Amnesty International mini shrine.
  • Very nice. My daughter picked up her post grad qualifications here
