Carlisle Castle Reviews
The castle dominates the town looking down, it's such a sight from afar you can some good shots from across the road. Use the underpass from Tullie House (also worth visiting) You get the real... more »
We visited on a rather windy wet and cold day in January 2020 however, the guide also braved the elements and gave a thorough interesting and excellent overview of the castles history and daily life..... more »
Great attraction and you can’t miss this if your in Carlisle. Took my little boy and he really enjoyed the experience. Be nice to engage the children in a little more activity but all in all a good... more »
Really nice deceptively large historic fortress. When you first enter the castle you get the impression that most of it is taken up by Military buildings, but once you head off to the corner you really see the scale of this historic fortress, made up largely of empty rooms where you can see the scale of the wall thickness of the buildings, a number of exhibits detail the history of the castle and its various buildings. The military museum within the grounds is well worth visiting with extensive displays of military equipment through the ages.
A pleasant couple of hours spent wondering the castle ruins. Dogs welcome everywhere apart from the cafe, which is understandable. Military museum is also worth a visit. Also free of you are an English heritage member.
The castle itself has been added to and altered throughout the ages but as it is mostly intact you can see the scale of it. It is full of facts about the history of the castle and area including the Jacobite uprising. The military museum and regimental museums are brilliant and worth the visit alone.
A great day out - full of history. Lots of exhibitions including the military museum. Admission charges apply to both the castle and the museum unless you have English Heritage membership. You're able to walk & have access to the majority of the grounds though some areas are out of bounds due to still being in use. Toilet facilities and a cafe are available.
Interesting castle the military exhibition is very informative of all the wars and conflicts. Well worth a visit. The cafe serves great coffee and lovely buns very reasonably priced. The young lady who served us was first class and very helpful also very polite. Well done.
