Carlisle Castle, Carlisle

4.0
Carlisle Castle has played an important role in the history of Carlisle for centuries. Explore this remarkably well-preserved castle's hallway and towers. Discover the dungeons, visit the keep with its model of Jacobean Carlisle, and browse through displays of military weapons, medals, and uniforms at the King's Own Royal Border Regiment Museum. For an informative, closer look at the castle, sign up for a guided tour led by an expert. The castle was first built by William Rufus and has witnessed many attacks over its 900 years of history. A parliament was held here by Edward I during his Scottish campaign in 1306. In 1567 it became a temporary prison for Mary, Queen of Scots. • Is not necessarily a must. The front wall and the buildings are still very well preserved, but you can not really see much.

  • Great place for adults as well as children, lovely grassed areas for picnics , cafe in the Cumbrian military life museum, toilets , English heritage shop, poppies weeping window there till July, well worth a visit if you didn't see the poppies in London go see them at Carlisle castle, the carved doodles on the second floor and interesting.
  • Literally ran into Americans from my county in Texas the same day I visited. Lots of history packed away in the smallish spaces. Great views of the town.
  • Went to military museum at the back end of castle and was really amazed at how well it was laid out and the amount of real equipment they have from the UK armies from well before world war two. Well worth the visit. :)
  • Really lovely castle. Lots of information and great displays. Well worth a visit 😁
  • Really lovely and informative visit here. Plenty of written boards of it's history. Very well presented and plenty of narrow windy stairs and walkways. Got around the walls too. Nice to see barracks still there and the militaria museum display about the local Border regiment was fantastic. A little more pricey than anticipated and too early in the season for the cafe to be open - shame; but a great way to spend a few hours
