Carew Castle & Tidal Mill, Carew

The illustrious Careway family built Carew Castle & Tidal Mill in its strategic location along a lowland river estuary. Take advantage of the unique location and the views from the parapets. Built on a site with over 2,000 years of occupation, researchers have even found Iron Age settlements on the same hill. With over a millennium of history, the castle has experienced many periods of growth and decline. The modern site is now heavily restored, so use the audio guide to bring it to life. Visit the tidal mill, a type of mill which turns with the rise and fall of the estuary waters--one of only four left in Britain. The mill is a fifteen-minute walk from the castle. Carew castle is relatively small, as castles go, but was fun to visit. However, combined with the Tidal Mill, just a few hundred yards away, it makes a good few hours entertainment. Even during August...  more »

Carew Castle is located next to a tidal estuary. An interesting castle to visit. There are some covered rooms but no physical access to the top of the towers. It's a short walk from the car park which is free. Toilet facilities are also provided. The Tidal Mill is a fifteen minute walk from the car park, and worth visiting. There is a gift shop with local produce but no toilets. Good location for bird watching. A circular walk from the car park via the Tidal Mill can also be done.

The castle, a hidden germ of Wales. 100% recommended. Nice walk, lots of history, and a working tidal mill. Jus beside the mill, you'll find a lovely small Coffee, offering cakes, some souvenir and a cup of coffee, or tea for a Pound. Closing time between 5 and 5.30 pm. Enjoy the view to the castle, cross the river, via bridge. Really great, for a filling afternoon.

The castle is very well kept and lots to explore, extremely friendly towards dogs, refreshments and gift shop also in the mill and castle. A lovely walk as well as a nice view from the mill to the castle and in reverse, the ticket for the castle includes access to the mill too.

I always enjoy visiting Carew Castle. The kids love climbing the stairs, even though most of them don't lead anywhere. The renovated hall and undercroft are interesting. A walk to the tidal mill is also worthwhile and you can do a circular walk around the castle, which is easygoing and gives some nice views of the castle across the water. The local pub does some excellent food.

Fantastic castle, really worth a visit if you are in the area. You can grab a cup of tea and then you are pretty much left to explore. Very good photo opportunities and a non commercial castle.
