Castell Coch, Cardiff

Categories: Castles, Tourist Spots
Inspirock Rating:
4.5/5 based on 1,100+ reviews on the web
William Burges' architectural magnum opus, Castell Coch, or Red Castle, is a dream world built by a patron and his favorite architect. Tour the rooms and take note of the ornate detail, vibrant color, and gilded workmanship that came to define the Victorian age. The castle was only lived in briefly by Lady Margaret Crichton-Stuart and, as such, has kept most of the original design intact. • I have been here around 4 times and taken friends from around the UK and also friends from Canada. All loved the place including my young Grandson.
  • The walk up to the castle was a bit long, but when you get there it's absolutely worth the walk. Amazing castle, feels like your in a fairytale.
  • Always love Castle Coch and found it just as welcoming as always. It is a very friendly place to visit, with realty helpful staff. The site itself is a testament to what can be done to a ruin. Small b...  read more »
  • I've been cycling from Cardiff here so many times to enjoy the forest. Now I've finally explored the interiors of the Castle with friends, and it was amazing! I really recommend visiting this beautiful building, and the surrounding forests too. Good price, so close to the city, it's the perfect day out.
  • Great day out. Wonderfully maintained castle. Learnt a lot about the history of its creation and residents. Audio guide was interesting and entertaining with some laugh out loud moments - executed in a unique fashion, as you "touch" the various points along the walk to activate the audio guide in a similar fashion to contactless cards.. I feel it worked very well, we all had a really enjoyable visit and would come again, especially as free entry is included in and annual cadw membership.
  • Beautifully quaint and well-maintained medieval castle, which was used as a vacation home for the Bute family. Stepping into the rooms truly evoke a magical feeling, as if entering an old, forgotten castle. The underground rooms (which are mostly bare walls) reflect the true unchanged state which they used to be, giving an overall sense of authenticity. Had a really lovely experience, especially since the grounds were rather quiet and not packed with tourists, affording one a leisurely exploration of the castle and its rich history.
  • Very nice castle with plenty of rooms to see. Kids loved it too and if they are under 5 it's free entry.
  • Nice castle expensive to get in though. Great for a bike ride from Cardiff and back
