Castell Coch, Cardiff

4.5
#2 of 14 in Historic Sites in Cardiff
William Burges' architectural magnum opus, Castell Coch, or Red Castle, is a dream world built by a patron and his favorite architect. Tour the rooms and take note of the ornate detail, vibrant color, and gilded workmanship that came to define the Victorian age. The castle was only lived in briefly by Lady Margaret Crichton-Stuart and, as such, has kept most of the original design intact. A visit to Castell Coch represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Cardiff driving holiday planner to plot your vacation.

  • A small but very interesting castle, with loads of history. A place not to be missed. Family visit, we all enjoyed it.  more »
  • One of the reasons I found my visit to the cafe inside the castle so disappointing was that it would be so easy to improve it. On the plus side, you can go to the cafe without paying the castle entran...  more »

  • A real fairytale castle with probably the most well-pitched audio guide we've come across (just the right amount of detail). Well worth a couple of hours to visit. Take your walking boots as there were some enticing woodland walks right by the castle entrance. It's as good as it looks from the road.
  • Beautiful castle nestled in a lovely out door trail with lots to see. Pretty and old with parking. If u fancy a quiet sit or a little dog walk this is perfect. I also like to run hear as the hill leading to the castle is steep and gets the heart rate up. I would recommend organising transport if u are disabled and or have mobility issues, as it is fairly physically demanding making your way to the castle. The surrounding area is lovely and there is a nice little pub less than 500m from the castle if u fancied a little drink.
  • Visited while on a short break..A very interesting castle and not to expensive. I would say that this isn't a great place for anyone with mobility problems as there are a lot of steep steps to reach the upper floors. Also in summer I can imagine this being a pain to visit as the stairs are not wide enough for two way traffic so you would be constantly waiting to either go up or down..
  • Lovely experience. Free audio guide. Lots of walking but worth it. Very interesting to see how they lived centuries ago. Enjoyed losing myself I'm the many rooms and climbing the winding staircases. Friendly staff. Very cute coffee shop. Not wheelchair or baby stroller friendly.
  • Lovely historical place ! easy to get to, has good parking facilities. Guess what they have a nice small pantry with one of the best Welsh brew served with homemade welsh cakes and Bars brith! experience the "High tea in a Castle" what more can you ask!!
