Castell Coch, Cardiff

4.6
#2 of 15 in Historic Sites in Cardiff
William Burges' architectural magnum opus, Castell Coch, or Red Castle, is a dream world built by a patron and his favorite architect. Tour the rooms and take note of the ornate detail, vibrant color, and gilded workmanship that came to define the Victorian age. The castle was only lived in briefly by Lady Margaret Crichton-Stuart and, as such, has kept most of the original design intact. A visit to Castell Coch represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Cardiff driving holiday planner to plot your vacation.

  • Great place! Beautiful castle, even on a rainy day and the staff are all lovely excited people. Had a wonderful time. Priced really reasonably for tickets, gift shop items and cafe. Pretty good food. Not hard to get to with public transport. Would go again.
  • Lovely place, very interesting. The audio guide (free) is a must. The tea rooms are lovely and reasonably priced, but there isn't much seating so I can imagine it being difficult to find a seat when it's busy. The toilets were okay, rather like an original castle toilet - small closet space but with a proper toilet instead of a hole in the floor. Car park was good, but the entrance is a little steep and narrow but no problem.
  • This is an amazing place. If you love visiting castles, this is a great way to help you visualize what an ancient castle in its living state would have been like. It's not ancient, its only a couple hundred years old, but the immensely wealthy builder painstakingly re-constructed the original castle using ancient methods and period techniques. Don't pass this one up if you are nearby.
  • A splendid job was done for the Easter egg hunt, lots of fun clues and hidden items. The castle itself is completely bonkers in the best ways, and a lot of fun for a 3yo to explore. It looks small from the outside, but there are so many passages and spirals stairs to find that it can occupy a good couple of hours. The only downside is the tiny, unsigned toilets, leading to enormous confusion for everyone.
  • Castell Coch was amazing. I went with my son and they have a fairy trail using your phone. It's best to download the app before you leave to go there and download the information so you don't need your wifi on when you get there. My son loved moving my phone trying to find the flying fairy. We collected all the fairies and got a set of stickers from the gift shop at the end. The castle was lovely and definitely worth a visit.
