Castell Coch, Cardiff

4.6
#2 of 14 in Historic Sites in Cardiff
William Burges' architectural magnum opus, Castell Coch, or Red Castle, is a dream world built by a patron and his favorite architect. Tour the rooms and take note of the ornate detail, vibrant color, and gilded workmanship that came to define the Victorian age. The castle was only lived in briefly by Lady Margaret Crichton-Stuart and, as such, has kept most of the original design intact. A visit to Castell Coch represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Cardiff driving holiday planner to plot your vacation.

  • We have visited many castles over the years and I have to say Castell Coch is my favourite. OK, so it's not a castle in the true sense of the word, more of a mock castle or folly, but I absolutely lov...  more »
  • This is definitely a fairy tale castle. Some steps are steep and narrow but a great workout for your legs. Love the colour of the stone work. Interesting painted interiors. The castle is in a great lo...  more »
  • Well kept and preserved. Surrounded by greenery, just 40 minutes north of Cardiff (at least two bus lines available-on 36 and 132). Pleasant hike lasting approximately 60/75 minutes. All rooms, with the exception of technical rooms and were uncle, can be visited. Recommended.

  • Lovely place. Ideal venue for dream weddings. Much history to be found. Excellent grounds for dog walking. Coaches can come here with plenty of space at the top for two or three coaches.
  • This was a really enjoyable side trip I took while visiting Cardiff. Perfectly maintained with lots to see and there is a recorded audio tour with your admission. Its also a great spot for a family with the only restriction being steep stairs in spots.
  • Fairytale castle on the outskirts of Cardiff. Plenty of parking space with lots of walking. Not a place to go to if you are looking for tea shops and shopping in general. This is for those interested in history, architecture, and the outdoors. The local trails are popular with runners but can be very hilly.
  • So fairy tale. Children will love it more than adults I think. Beautiful scenery & setting
  • Nice place to visit. Easily spent a couple of hours here. Probably not worth a long journey to visit. Staff are very friendly especially the retired rocker in the gift shop. Great bloke, welcoming and helpful \m/
