Cardiff Castle, Cardiff

4.4
Explore 2,000 years of history at Cardiff Castle, built on a site first used by Roman invaders. The original fort constructed here was a rectangular structure much larger than the current castle, which was built during the Norman invasions of the late 1060s. Norman advance into Wales was often marked by the construction of castles, frequently on old Roman sites. Improved and expanded over the centuries, the castle is now a tourist attraction. Don’t miss a visit to the castle’s Firing Lane Museum of the Welsh Soldier, which is a joint regimental museum of the Queen’s Dragoon Guards and the Royal Welsh. Check online for special events, including concerts, lectures, jousting demonstrations, and plays. • Recommend that you take a guided tour, or audiotur. The building itself is fine in itself, but to get out much more if you follow along on a trip. I took a live guided tours which I recommend!

  • We visited here on a Sunday morning and surprisingly the queues for tickets weren't too long, but it took quite a while to get to the head of the queue. When our turn arrived to go to one of the three...  more »

  • Great attraction featuring a castle (motte and bailey) and an historic house. The guided tour round the house is recommended to see rooms the general public don't get to see -fantastic decoration inside. Castle walls also feature an air-raid shelter attraction, but that wasn't much really. A shop and restaurant complete the offering making for a great day.
  • The castle is definitely worth a visit when in Cardiff! The house is beautifully decorated and has information available in a wide variety of languages. The keep has some steep stairs but the views are pretty from the top. Visit when the weather is good if possible ☺
  • Most of the outermost structure is restored, only the inner keep is original Norman. Having said that it has been rebuilt as a stunning example of the Arts and Crafts movement. The grounds are heavily used for events all year long and it's well worth looking at the website.
  • A vibrant and lively park perfect for family days. Lots of demonstration and storytelling session throughout the day, and a big open area for picnics. The site is less likely a historical place as the ruins did not managed to restore. But the audio guide does provide the history of this castle. They are offering a discount who has the audio guide app installed could receive a 10% off ticket price.
  • A bit expensive but a good castle with plenty to see. On a nice day it is great just to sit outside the cafe and enjoy the surroundings. The castle apartments are well worth a look.
