Cardiff Castle, Cardiff

4.4
#1 of 199 in Historic Sites in Wales
Castle Tourist Spot
Explore 2,000 years of history at Cardiff Castle, built on a site first used by Roman invaders. The original fort constructed here was a rectangular structure much larger than the current castle, which was built during the Norman invasions of the late 1060s. Norman advance into Wales was often marked by the construction of castles, frequently on old Roman sites. Improved and expanded over the centuries, the castle is now a tourist attraction. Don’t miss a visit to the castle’s Firing Lane Museum of the Welsh Soldier, which is a joint regimental museum of the Queen’s Dragoon Guards and the Royal Welsh. Check online for special events, including concerts, lectures, jousting demonstrations, and plays. • Such a great place to visit if you are into your history. The old mott and bailey is a bit of a climb if you can, give it a go as the view looks fantastic. Inside the newer part of the castle head up to the oriental garden, again well worth the climb.
  • The castle in itself is not that impressive, the outer wall is nice to walk through as it gives you an idea of how hit Cardiff was during WWII. The main tower is in ruin but still worth visiting. What I liked the most was the manor you can wander in. We only paid for the normal ticket thinking that the rooms would not be worth paying for but I regret my choice. The rooms included in the normal entrance ticket are mesmerizing and we spent a good hour looking at the detailed painted ceilings and tapestries, I can only imagine how beautiful the "secret" rooms must be. Consider buying the more expensive ticket if your interested in interior design!
  • Very nice castle. Interesting history including the air raid shelter area used in WWII. It is fun to climb to the top of the keep with spectacular views. There is a falconry on the site. When we visited there was a young man on the grounds with owls who would fly back and forth on command.
  • Been visiting Cardiff my whole life, and we'd always visit Cardiff Castle. Beautiful site, great history. Quite a lot to explore, found the bunkers my last visit that I had no idea existed previously. The house tour is worth the extra £3, and they've got student discounts. Maybe even senior discounts. Definitely a must for anyone visiting Cardiff. Family friendly too.
  • A fun day out with the family. There is loads to see from the war rooms to the Norman army. The highlight, however, must be the house with it's over the top room. Don't miss the ceiling in the Arab room. A real stunner!
