#2 of 24 in Trails in Lake District
Enjoy tranquility amidst a dramatic landscape at Buttermere, a scenic lake by a dairy pasture. Take a footpath along the perimeter of the water, and enjoy views of the Lake District's classic combination of lakes and mountains. Climb up Haystacks and Red Pike to get sweeping vistas of the Lakeland. Easy access through the farm and woodland setting makes the lake one of the most popular family strolls in the area. You can usually enjoy some refreshments at two nearby farms--try the locally made ice cream. • i love Buttermere it is not commercialised as is Windermere and Ambleside. Not too good for accomodation but Keswick is not too far away to use as a base. There is a lovely lake walk and the waterfall...  more »
  • We decided to walk all the way around for the first time. We did 5.1 miles at a gentle stroll, and the dog kept jumping in the Lake for a swim. We're a bit footsore after it and the dogs crashed out !...  more »

  • A beautiful and tranquil location , walks to suit all abilities from a stroll around the lake or one of the many fell top routes.
  • Buttermere is a beautiful and tranquil location, often reached via the dizzying Honnister pass. There's a flat, circular walk around the lake or you can ascend one of the fells surrounding the lake for a more challenging route. Sunrise or a calm evening may give you a mirror-flat lake and then a wonderful view, with the hills reflected in the water.
  • 2.5 hr walk. Pub half way is dog friendly. Great flat walk
  • Nice lake but no proper parking anywhere. You just have to park on the verge and hope for the best.
  • Fantastic footpath around lake offering stunning views every footstep
