Causeway Coastal Route, Bushmills

The Causeway Coastal Route consists of a scenic 193 km (120 mi) road weaving its way around the northern Irish coast between Belfast and Londonderry. Distinctive brown road signs direct visitors to a host of major tourist attractions, including The Giant’s Causeway, Dunluce Castle, and The Old Bushmills Whiskey Distillery, set amongst cliffs, mountains, waterfalls, and golden sands. Make sure you give yourself time to explore and enjoy unplanned adventures and tempting deviations. Some of the roads leading off the route to attractions can be quite narrow, so do take care if you’re not used to driving on small roads. • We loved the Coastal Route! It was the first to make us really and truly feel like we were in Ireland! Breath taking views. You would go from farm land one second, to plunging cliffs, to the ocean and...  more »
  • A constant alternate way in an ever-changing landscape. Wherever you want to stop and look around you. Rugged rocks, cans, raging sea, wide grassy countries. Really gorgeous! With very friendly people on every place where you stop.

  • Spectacular views. Narrow roads, though. You might like to consider driving, counter clockwise, so you are closer to the edge!  more »

  • Beautiful scenery. I was lucky because the weather was good.. am told often too misty to see anything. Giants causeway is a place to visit.
  • We hired a car while visiting NI. And as we were staying in Belfast. We first drove to Giant Causeway and other attractions. Then we drove back using the Causway coastal route. You can stop on the way and take in the beautiful scenery.
  • This is a beautiful scenic drive particularly if you take the minor roads further up the coast and get really close to the rocky cliffs. Great photo opportunities and a feeling that you are really away from it all
  • Great drive. Carrick a rede suspension bridge is spectacular. Giants Causeway is good but way to many people - go early.
  • The Causeway Coastal route is the north coast section of the Antrim Coast Road - one of the best drives in the world. To see it at it's best allow plenty of time and stop frequently. Portaneevy viewpoint, between Ballycastle and Ballintoy has superb views of Rathlin Island, Islay and the Mull of Kintyre as well as Sheep Island and the Rope bridge at Carrick-a- rede. Don't miss Ballintoy harbour, which in addition to its Game of Thrones fame is a great place for walking to White Park Bay and to see some of the unique geology of the coast. Dunseverick Harbour is well hidden but a fine example of what was until recently a working North Coast fishing harbour. The Giants Causeway is next - if you want to approach it from a different direction and avoid the crowds and parking costs of the main entrance, walk from Dunseverick Castle and take in the impressive cliffs at the east end of the Causeway. After Portballintrae comes Dunluce Castle, the Whiterocks beach and Portrush. Portstewart and its beach to the Bann Estuary is as far as you can go, before you need to go inland to Coleraine to cross the river. The most feature packed coast in the British Isles!
