College Green, Bristol

(3.8/5 based on 65+ reviews on the web)
College Green is a public open space in Bristol, England. The Green takes the form of a segment of a circle with its apex pointing east, and covers 1.1ha. The road named College Green forms the north-eastern boundary of the Green, the Bristol Cathedral marks the south side, and City Hall (formerly the Council House) closes the Green in an arc to the north-west.College Green is owned by the Dean and Chapter of Bristol Cathedral, and managed by Bristol City Council.HistoryOriginally a small hill north of the River Avon separated from Brandon Hill to the north west by a narrow gully, College Green was enclosed to form the precincts of St Augustine's Abbey (now Bristol Cathedral) in the 12th century. After the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the abbey became a collegiate church and its precincts thenceforth became known as 'College Green'.The Bristol High Cross was moved here from its original location at the junction of High, Wine, Broad and Corn streets, where it had been considered a traffic hazard, in 1733. In 1762 the Green was levelled and laid out as a raised park with stone boundary walls, railings and formal promenades crossing at its centre. The High Cross was relegated to a corner of the Green, and in 1768 it was given to Henry Hoare for use as a garden ornament at Stourhead, where it can still be seen.

  • Awesome park, where I often relaxed and caught a wonderful sight attraction. Awesome birds around to feed your eyes on.
  • Nice park just at the bottom of the park street. nice picnic area on sunny day! there is a tesco store just across the street as well as tasty icecream place SWOON
  • I always thought the parks as green gardens but I never thought about how much those green gardens could offer. College green is a small urban park in the Centre of Bristol with activities for all ages. There are guys with their skateboards that practice, guys and couples who use the Park to read, sunbathe and eat their lunch and relax in their work break. There are families playing with children and grandparents sitting in the bleachers watching and relaxing with a cup of hot tea. A show

  • A beautiful Park area around college buildings. Often supporting public displays such as art pieces or recent remembrance day commemorations. Beautiful place to spend some time relaxing and reading.
  • Good place to hang out or have a picnic. I'd love it if there were live music/buskers but as far as I can tell there isn't ever. There are also cute friendly birds.
  • A nice patch of green in the centre of the city. Also a political focal point as it's just outside City Hall. Equally likely to be filled with protesters as it is with lunching office workers, but the one constant is always the few skateboarders in the round.
  • Next to college green is nice Park where u can sit down and relax. Also next to park is Bristol Cathedral , you can enjoy siting on grass, relax your self and look on beautiful Bristol Cathedral.
  • Enjoy the architecture, the grass, the fountains and plenty of places to get a drink to enjoy here too!
