Bristol Cathedral, Bristol

(4.5/5 based on 800+ reviews on the web)
It took more than 700 years to build Bristol Cathedral, considered one of the finest medieval churches in Europe. Still in operation today for worship, community service, and private prayer, the cathedral began as an Augustine abbey. Visitors can still trace the original transepts, but it’s the tall Gothic windows and pinnacled skyline that will capture your attention. To understand the full majesty of the structure, it’s best to take a step back as far as possible on College Green where it is located. Entering the cathedral, be sure to be on the lookout for surprising details, including carvings of beasts imitating people in the Elder Lady Chapel. Guided tours are available, and you can book portions of the cathedral for private candlelit dinners.  Add Bristol Cathedral and other attractions to your Bristol trip itinerary using our Bristol trip builder.

  • A really beautiful building with lovely stained glass windows. It's free to enter. There is a small shop. Recommended.  more »

  • Truly breathtaking inside and out, this Cathedral blew me away with its grandeur of history and culture! I just wish I'd of visited on a day that did not have so many school day trips, as i wanted to immerse myself in an historical wonderland, but instead i had to keep my thoughts to myself until i left this outstanding building, as the noise was so overwhelming, very disappointing, as i wanted it to be a magical experience from the moment i step in, until the time i left. Another downside is as soon as i arrived, i was made to feel uncomfortable that i was not paying to gain entry to this amazing work of art, by the lady who greeted me upon entry, that i felt obliged to hand over money out of courtesy for the privilege of gaining entry to something so beautiful, but isn't this a free cathedral with the option of donating? I also felt watched the whole time i was near anything that required a donation, such as lighting a candle, i think i must of spent at least £10 in this brief trip that lasted less than an hour out of a time restraint, so very much worth it though, but it should still be by choice to donate or not surely?
  • Stunning Building. The evening choral song is absolutely incredible to hear. Truly a magnificent place of God.
  • Big and interesting cathedral, but with a coffee shop and a souvenirshop inside it is really comercial...
