You approach Upton Cressett on a winding single track road and you travel in the hope of not meeting an oncoming farm vehicle. On the way in we were lucky, on the way out we weren't. When you arrive, ...  more »

  • Honeymoon disappointment at The Gatehouse! In February we booked two nights at The Gatehouse for a special treat following our wedding - as a frequent contributer myself I checked the traveller reviews before booking. I chose to ignore the negative ones as there were multiple glowing reports too. We phoned to request a meal as we would be arriving late on the Thursday after our perfect June wedding - this was waiting in the fridge and was delicious. The key was left in the door and we let ourselves in to this amazing building. A family member greeted us lunchtime the following day and I explained we had no bathrobes or luxury toiletries, which she later provided - she said that we weren't expected until Friday night and therefore a lady was coming to measure up for some curtains in the second bedroom which we weren't using - so we agreed to this as it wasn't going to take long. At 5pm we returned from a trip out to find the curtain lady and her assistant still working in the property - debris outside evidence of some extensive work inside. I was shocked to discover they had been replacing curtains in our main bedroom, had moved our wedding possessions and walked on the bed to fit a canopy above - we were left with no curtains next to the bath overnight. Overall a very upsetting situation on what should have been a very happy time. I contacted Lady Cash directly to relay my dissatisfaction and she agreed a refund - I then received £200, with her stating that “...we thought you were arriving Saturday” and a comment in her email saying “We'd appreciate no negative publicity as we are compensating you for a day.” We overlooked the cobwebs and extensive dust in places as this was an old property and the bed very comfortable - we also ignored various other problems, including the dried up instant coffee and grubby sugar in their canisters. However, if you do choose to stay in this beautiful property please ensure you call ahead and speak to Lady Cash to check your stay has been organised correctly to avoid any problems - I should have heeded other traveller reports!  The facilities and customer service are not five star luxury as advertised.
