#3 of 11 in Things to do in Brentford
The Museum will reopen to the public at 11:00 on 22 March 2014

Built in the 19th century to supply London with water, the museum is recognised as the most important historic site of the water supply industry in Britain.

Marvel at the world's largest collection of steam pumping engines, many of which you can see working every weekend.

See how London's water supply has evolved from Roman times to the present day.

  • This is a fantastic museum which probably doesn't get the numbers of visitors that it deserves because of its slightly obscure focus- steam engines. But its such an exciting place to visit due to the large selection of huge engines which are looked after by dedicated volunteers. The engines were mainly used for public water supply, before electrical pumps superceded them. They are all beautiful and unique but typically most of them are only operational a few times a day. In the case of the largest engine in the museum -the awesome Cornish 90-Inch- it is only on for two days a month (and for 30 minutes each day!). As such you should plan your visit carefully and ideally aim to come when the Cornish engines are running. There are also exhibits about London's water supply and information about how sewage treatment works- which is very interesting. Additionally, on some days a small steam train runs around the back of the museum which is fun, and free! Overall, this is a brilliant place and the entry price is definitely worth it. To see as many engines as possible, you will want to spend a good morning/afternoon here.
  • Had a day out with a 4 and 6 year old (who were more interested in the model steam railway). The museum had a full day of steam engine demonstrations, but check before you go, to make sure that they are running the steam engines. The museum is well laid out, and can entertain families young and old. The volunteers are very friendly and knowledgeable. I was expecting a few greasy old steam engines, but was pleasantly surprised that the museum was very professional. A great piece of history and engineering in action!
  • Great little museum with beautiful old steam engines, in working condition. The people who were doing maintenance on one noticed I'd looking and took time out to explain how it worked, very nice of him.
  • We come here every week. I highly recommend it. The pumps and splash area are my sons favourite. Hopefully we will go this weekend to see the train in action
  • Really interesting, very hands on museum. Had a lovely day. Short on car park spaces though!
