National Science and Media Museum, Bradford

#2 of 11 in Museums in Bradford
Peruse galleries that immortalize the UK's media greats, from television to animation, at National Science and Media Museum, a paradise of screens. The museum features seven floors of galleries that showcase everything from photography to videogaming and the Internet. In 1998, some of the BBC's offices relocated to the building, making this a fully operational film research facility and professional space. Make sure to visit the "Magic Factory," where you can conduct hands-on experiments with light and color to discover how they are used in film. Both the animation and gaming galleries have classic games that you can play. All seven floors of galleries are free; however, you must buy a ticket to the three cinemas located inside the building, including an IMAX screen. National Science and Media Museum hosts three international film festivals annually: Bradford International Film Festival, Bradford Animation Festival, and Fantastic Films Weekend. • I have been going to the Media Museum since 1983. I only go for one thing and that is the IMAX theatre. The Museum would be nothing without the IMAX theatre. If you have never experienced an IMAX movi...  more »
  • Visited today with my 12 year old who reluctantly went along, but he enjoyed it more than he thought he would. It's learning in a fun environment. Free entry but donations welcomed to keep it running.  more »

  • I hadn't been since I was a child. An excellent museum, definitely worth a visit. I would plan on a visit lasting a full day to get round all the zones. Ideal as a rain day activity for anyone visiting Edinburgh. Stuff for both adults and children.
  • Great free day out. Suitable for most ages so is good for families with children of all ages. Lots of interactive displays and things for children to look at and touch. The new wonderlabs exhibit is very good, the children enjoyed that the most. The children also enjoyed playing on the free video games however a couple of them didn't work properly anymore. Only gave it four stars as some of the older exhibits are looking their age a bit, the animation part could do with updating. Would definitely recommend as a cheap day out.
  • A good day out, or an afternoon off browsing, or an evening taking in a blockbusting film. However long you choose to spend in this place will be time well spent. Lots to do with children or other adults: explore behind the scenes of British television, absorb yourself in any of a number of exhibitions, be awed by the sheer magnitude of the Imax screen with its superb surround sound. This is definitely a place for all the family. Free admission to the museum.
  • Magic place. Its a lot better than it was when it was just the media museum. Very helpful staff and a nice cafe. Exhibition was fantastic and we spent a good five hours there. Good for all ages. My grandson really enjoyed the retro video games. Space invaders rule! Parking is a real pain. No where near enough spaces. Prices are good but you would be better going on public transport. And we went on a Tuesday! It must be hopeless at the weekends.
  • We spent an amazing afternoon at the museum. Seeing the space capsule close up was a great experience, we were both in awe at the scorch marks and sheer size of the parachute. We also paid just to enjoy the VR experience, which while short seemed worth the small fee. All of the exhibits are fun for all ages.

Where to stay in Bradford

Hotel chains and less expensive accommodations populate the city center. Lodging is also scattered outside the center; however, a centralized location is safer and closer to the main attractions. A few B&Bs are hidden on the outskirts of the city and offer comfortable rooms in quiet neighborhoods.
