National Science and Media Museum, Bradford

(4.3/5 based on 1,100+ reviews on the web)
Peruse galleries that immortalize the UK's media greats, from television to animation, at National Science and Media Museum, a paradise of screens. The museum features seven floors of galleries that showcase everything from photography to videogaming and the Internet. In 1998, some of the BBC's offices relocated to the building, making this a fully operational film research facility and professional space. Make sure to visit the "Magic Factory," where you can conduct hands-on experiments with light and color to discover how they are used in film. Both the animation and gaming galleries have classic games that you can play. All seven floors of galleries are free; however, you must buy a ticket to the three cinemas located inside the building, including an IMAX screen. National Science and Media Museum hosts three international film festivals annually: Bradford International Film Festival, Bradford Animation Festival, and Fantastic Films Weekend. National Science and Media Museum is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our custom trip planner, Bradford Edition.

  • We regularly visit the museum. The new Wonderland exhibition is a really excellent addition. There are lots of hands on exhibits which will occupy all ages (my 18 month old and 3 year old loved it). The rest of the museum is more suitable for older children but there is plenty to keep you there for a good portion of the day, particularly if you spend time in the video archive on the top floor. The temporary Pinhole Camera and 'Britain in Focus' exhibitions looked great (we flew through with the kids who weren't as interested). It would be great if there were some Pinhole cameras to try. The museum restaurant is great. Lunch bags for the kids and proper food for the grown ups. The currys are particularly good. A really excellent museam.
  • Enjoyed the experience, it was quite nostalgic. Particularly liked the games section but it would have been good if we didn't have to pay to play as it is a museum. Staff were very helpful and it has a great gift shop too :)
  • Excellent as usual. Been visiting since the 90's. Even more so since having the children. Some of the old exhibition look tired but still of interest to newcomers. Visited the wonderlab today - 1 word (Amazing).... Imax- excellent as ever Car park to rear ( easily located) Ample free parking on Sundays at the back of the (Alhambra) theatre if required, just read the parking signs to ensure you are parked legally. A short walk from the bus train/ station - for those travelling by public transport. Always has events during Easter and other school holidays. Keep up the good work. 5 stars
  • Amazing place. Exhibitions are really interesting, especially for me as an IT person who has great interest in technology. However, I think that even people without this kind of interest, will find the exhibitions interesting thanks to the way they were constructed. They literally take you for a journey and walk you through the history. They show very clearly how much progress we have made in a relarively short amount of time. There is a coffee, free toilets and the best IMAX cinema in the UK. This is something Bradford can be well proud of.
  • Great place to take the kids and experience the IMAX theater, truly amazing if you see one of the 3d films on at the time. Lots of interesting exhibit,s and the staff are really friendly and helpful.
