House of Marbles, Bovey Tracey

4.4
#1 of 108 in Shopping in Devon
House of Marbles is a splendid place to visit in Bovey Tracey, just off the A38 on the outskirts of Dartmoor. With no charge for admission and free parking, hours can be spent watching the many fantastical marble runs in action. Seek out new and exciting treats in the gift, game and homeware shop.

It is a unique site with plenty for all ages and the whole family to see. Explore the museums, learn about the history of pottery and view the bottle kilns that are still standing today. Be amused by the spiffing games of old, ponder the many generations who’ve played with the antique marbles on display and catch a glimpse of the history of glass before watching it being crafted in the onsite working glassworks.

Stay for a bite to eat in the licensed Old Pottery Restaurant, open for breakfast, lunch with choices from the Chef’s specials board, or afternoon tea. There’s outdoor seating for warmer months and a secluded children’s play frame, and this is also where you’ll hunt down the huge floating marble in the games garden.

Don’t miss a visit to this treasure on the edge moors.

  • It seemed to me to be not a lot more than one big marble run, a room of pottery displays and a lot of shopping opportunities. If there was more, sign posting is lacking. Very disappointed as the broch...  more »

  • This is a wonderful experience looking into the past for Toys, pottery and glass. Also here is the magnificent marble mechanisms one of which is huge being built on the Gable End of the building. You can also watch glass items being made in the lid fashion way of blowing. Numerous things to do see and buy but not cheapest of places. However there is no Admission charges. Also inside is the pottery cafe which was very busy at the time of our visit. Summing this place up with it brought back many happy childhood memories. I would recommend a visit if you are in the area.
  • Went today for the first time (had a leaflet for ages) ... wow, what a great place. Marble runs were cool, the shop was fantastic and chatting with the glass blowers was really interesting (and funny). I'm going again tomorrow and taking my parents as I know that they'll love the place. We didn't try the cafe but we will be eating there tomorrow.
  • Free! Marble runs are great to watch, can easily spend 30 minutes watching people at work in the glass factory. Interesting museum section. Food in the cafe was surprisingly excellent and not over priced. Great shop! Parking limited
  • Having been to the area a few times in the past 25 years this was the first time that I visited The House Of Marbles and I wish I'd been before. There's an interesting marble / game & toy / glass / pottery museum, working glass factory where you can watch them make some of the beautiful products also for sale (had to buy a couple LOL) There's also a very extensive gift shop and a lovely cafe with outside seating / games area. Lovely place and as a bonus its FREE to get into.
  • While it does not take long to get around there is plenty of history on pottery, marbles and glass. There's also a fascinating glass workshop where one can watch glass products being hand made and an outdoor children's play area. Loads of parking and it's free admission. Did not try the restaurant as it was stuffed. Huge gift shop. A lovely place to visit.
